TN: Gianfranco Alessandria Barbera D'Alba 2020

Post by Waiters Friend »

G'day

Light purple colour. A fragrant nose, with violets, dark cherries, ripe blueberries, blackberry and some spicy notes. The palate is medium bodied, with herbal notes (dried rosemary, oregano) added to the spices and juicy fruits. Freshening acid and reasonable length. Savoury notes towards the finish.

Not a powerhouse, but enough complexity to maintain interest.

Cheers

I never had much of a taste for Barbera, but developed an interest via the rather big and bold wines of Giacomo Bologna / Braida (Ai Suma, Bricco della Bigotta and Bricco dell'Uccellone).

Only then did I go back and rediscover the typically more restrained Barbera d'Alba wines, and especially with 5-10 years on them, realised I enjoyed them. I fear my initial view was 'not nebbiolo, so not as good', but when I saw the grape (and the wines) for its own merit, I came round to liking them.
