Hi All, it’s been a while.

The Melbourne Auswine Crew got together on Saturday to look at the 2005 Guigal and Gaja, finished with an Amontillado.

All wines were in climate control storage from release and showed really well. Really hard to pick winners and losers but I think the La Turque was the most seductive and perfumed and loved the Amontillado, this might be my first.

I loved all of the Guigal wines, which were showing maturity and great development.
I can't take anything away from the Gaja wines. They were an awesome set.
Loved the amontillado, too.
What struck me about all of the reds was how phenomenal they were structurally; tannins and acidity working in tandem so well together. I was continually amazed at how good they felt in the mouth. Classy stuff, indeed!

Another thing with the Guigal and Gaja I was expecting a lot of oak but at the 20 year mark they seem to come together.

I’ve been fortunate to taste at the Palace a few times and one amazing tasting, Gaia Gaja stated that she’s presented old Mascarelos and SSL and nobody could pick the oak.

I often wonder how much Gaja lies out there on the market. It’s easy to find. Just have to pay the big bucks!
