Howard Park Abercrombie Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Post by Waiters Friend »

G'day.

This bottle was sealed under cork, which collected a fair amount of sediment (see pic). Surprisingly, very little sediment remained in the wine after decanting.

I hosted a vertical tasting of this wine in 2020. https://forum.auswine.club/viewtopic.php?p=1 ... 16#p163197. This is what the tasting group said about the wine at the time:

Howard Park Abercrombie Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 (77% Margaret River, 23% Great Southern, 14.5% alc): Crimson in colour. The somewhat savoury nose shows cedary oak, over black and blue fruits, with coffee grounds, fresh thyme, pepper berries and crunchy rhubarb. There’s fruit sweetness on the palate with mulberry and brambles, and grippy drying fine tannins. Acid is cleansing and the mouthfeel is velvety. Long finish. Several tasters described the wine as ‘elegant’, and this was a term used frequently as the tasting went on.

Four years on, the wine has developed nicely. The blackcurrants and blueberries are now more to the fore, although the oak aromas remain present, and there's a nice whiff of eucalypt alongside the thyme and rhubarb. The palate is also fruit-forward, with mulberries joining the darker berries, and tannins are starting to integrate nicely. Acid is mildly supportive, and the velvet mouthfeel remains somewhat.

Very long finish, without being overly heavy. Perhaps the word "elegant" which featured in the 2020 notes still applies well now. Very enjoyable. I wonder how developed the same wine under screwcap is?

Cheers
Allan
