TN: Tahbilk Eric Stevens Purbrick Shiraz 2016

Post by Waiters Friend »

G'day

This is Tahbilk's premium shiraz (and distinct from their super-premium 1860 Shiraz at 5 times the price). It's a total coincidence that, when I visited the winery in 2012, I purchased their ESP 2006 and here I am 10 years later on having just got hold of the 2016.

Decanted 2 hours before service. Deep purple in the glass. Lovely red and dark plums, blueberries, mocha, cloves, a touch of cinnamon and nutmeg. The palate is fresh and lively, with a little raspberry or redcurrant joining the blueberries and plums. There's also some milk chocolate, and this comes across texturally as well as flavour. Medium to long finish.

Overall, a medium bodied wine, but some richness and complexity. Still a baby (I still have a couple of the 2006s I bought a decade ago, and several other vintages), and I'm glad this was my first serious look at it. It will be a while before I do it again.

Cheers
Allan
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.
