Wine Storage
Wine Storage
Just read an ads in the Wine magazine which mention a major wine storage warehouse in Brisbane was out of electricity for three days in Feb.
Any idea which warehouse is it? I store majority of my wines in Miller.
Are they suppose to inform their client if it is really happened?
Will the insurance cover this? How can we prove our loss?

Hi,
I don't think the insurance will cover for the potential loss. I don't stor wine in Millers, but from what I know they only cover for the wine that is physically damaged.
Eg, if there is a fire and none of the bottle is actually broken, but is heat damaged you can not apply for compensation because none of the wine is actually broken or missing. Insurance in the commerical storage facility is not worth it at all. I only have minimum coverage for mine

If it is not covered for that kind of damage and you have it in a private locker there probably isn't any point in insurance if it isn't going to cover you for spoilage. If you have it on the shelf with other palates and they get it down with forklifts and the likes, it is still a good idea. I think I'm going to quit my insurance....hmmmm
cheers,
cheers,
simm.

A 30 sqm room in the lowest level of the house which is partly underground with normal air-conditioner installed. The temperture is able to maintain around 18 C with hum. around 70. Bought some wine rack and put them on two side of the wall which include single and dozen bottle holder. At the moment, they can hold around 2000 bottles. Considering to install another professional cooler next year which can lower the temperture to 16 C and extend it to hold 3000 bottles..
God I do feel inadequate now. What criteria do you use to pick your wines? Aging potential ? Variety?
Ever considered a Fondis unit to keep the wine down to about 14 degrees and 70 - 80 percent humidity?

Brand, Recommandation from media or wine experts, Winery visit and tasting etc. Majority of the wines I picked can cellar for 5 to 10 years at least and 50% of them is Australia Shiraz.
Yes, I did consider to get a Fondis, where can I find more information about it? Do they have a web site??
By the way , how you record your wine. I am considering to purchase the software progame released by Winestate magazine. Anyone tried it before and what is the comment on it?

As for the Fondis, there is an Australian supplier - I'll get the details tonight and email you tomorrow.
I just use an excell spread sheet for my record keeping. I've tried the Red Bigots program - it's very very good and very free Give it a look before you spend money

Thanks for the information and any idea how much will it cost include installation for an area around 80 m3?

This is too much space for a Fondis Unit, especially in Brisbane.
I'm getting a cellar built in my garage and having a Kirby refrigeration unit installed. This is an Australian made unit with about 3000W capacity (cf. Fondis C50's 1200W capacity), and the unit can be set to 14C and 65-70% humidity. The cellar is being built by a coolroom company in Melbourne which has built many cellar for wine collectors.
BTW, the Kirby unit is a commercial split system unit, and is more expensive than the Fondis unit.

So how much is your Kirby cost you??

Note: I have no connections with either firm, Just noticed their ad in the SMH.
Prior to last summer I installed a used commercial display fridge (2 door) in a friends garage. Its thermostat allowed it to be turned down to 14 C. Also the On-Off cycle time could be set. It worked perfectly all during last summer. Temperature in the garage 25 - 30 deg C yet inside fridge a steady 16 C. For humidity regulation we just used a drip tray inside the cabinet to collect the condensed water and let it evaporate again. The cost for the fridge was $ 1200 which included new compressor and 1 year warranty. Now we just have to manufacture some more shelves.
