TN: Peel Estate Shiraz 2013

Post by Waiters Friend »

This is the current release of this wine, with all grapes coming from the original vines planted in 1973. Generally, this wine is released at 6 years of age.

Crimson in colour. Powerful and complex nose, with ripe red plums, dark chocolate or cocoa powder, spicy oak, cloves, redcurrants, and a little polished leather. I could just nose this for hours - fortunately for this tasting note, I didn't :D

The palate is full bodied yet balanced and poised. The red and dark fruits dance across the tongue, with the red fruits almost tangy on the front of the tongue. and with the aid of clean supporting acid. Tannins are quite well integrated already but provide a good degree of grip. The wine finishes very long and satisfying.

I hosted a vertical of this wine in 2015 http://forum.auswine.com.au/viewtopic.php?f ... az#p128371. At that tasting, general opinion was that this wine should be drunk between 10-15 years of age, and I see no reason to vary that opinion. Certainly this 2013 appears youthful, but if this is how you enjoy your shiraz, then this "youthful" 8 year old wine will not disappoint. For me, I have most of a case put away to track its gradual evolution.

Two and a half years on from the last TN, this is hitting its straps.

The nose remains powerful and complex. Red plums and dark fruits, more cocoa, and the spice range has increased if anything. Leather has dissipated, but may re-emerge with a few more years.

Lots of fruit on the palate, and the tannins are fully integrated and in the background. Long finish. This is definitely in the window, but should stay there for some time. Excellent WA shiraz.

Cheers
