Need Help - Adelaide Wine Storage
Need Help - Adelaide Wine Storage
Hi.
I need some short term (say 2 -6 months) storage of around 30-40 dozen wines in Adelaide likely over summer. Are there any recommendations out there?
Also where can I get storage boxes at a reasonable price?
Many thanks for any assistance.

The only place I am familiar with is Kennards at Thebarton, not stored personally, but pick up some Wickmans Auction purchases from there from time to time . Always good service and the wines stored perfectly.

+1
Can't speak highly enough of Kennards (Theb). You'll need a big bin for 40 -50 doz but mix it up into dozens, and 6-packs, both flat 6 and 2 x 3 - it's amazing how much more you can squeeze in.

Give the Tunnels at Pasadena a try, good rates
Re: Need Help - Adelaide Wine Storage
Many thanks for the tip. Great rates and only 10 minutes from home. I like the pallet option of $11 per month. Certainly cheaper than Kennards.kohen wrote:Give the Tunnels at Pasadena a try, good rates
Still looking for info on boxes to pack wines into.

But it’s not temperature controlled and I can’t see info on their climate conditions?

On their website they state the temperature remains at 17C year round. Consistency is the key. Not perfect but OK for my needs. Being an old railway tunnel under the Adelaide Hills I think is pretty good. Certainly better than my underground bunker that varies between 13C in winter and 19C in summer.

Not quite as convenient as a Kennards style storage. Look like you don't actually physically access your wines to/from storage, they do it. So if you need a particular bottle or bottles at a given time, might not be so convenient. Don't have 24/7 access either. Long term storage I guess wouldn't matter from that point of view. Passive cellar conditions of course, so not likely to be as cool as you might optimally might want, 17C is a couple of degrees too high in my book. $11/mth for a pallet, whatever they define as a pallet, is a good price though. As you say, probably better than rudimentary under house storage (I have that as well as Kennards in Melb)

Access is pretty easy, I give them 24 hrs notice and they bring the pallet out so you can sort what you want. They label each box as well, you can request individual lots.
Have been in height of summer and it’s always cool inside , the tunnel goes quite deep under mountain.

An old railway tunnel under a mountain sounds ideal and If the temperature is stable then you should be fine. Also at 17C your wines will not age at a glacial pace and that is no bad thing as we all get older. Besides, it's a better temperature over the summer than your place.

Twenty years ago for a short period of time, I stored some of my wines I was buying when abroad in an ADL facility that wan't temperature controlled. Upon inspection I was keen to remove them.
I'd ask to see electronic temperature records if fastidious and your cellar loaded with collectables.

Inspected The Tunnels and it's a great concept. I was amazed how much wine was stored there. The main tunnel looked about 150m in length and it was stacked with wines in their own specifically designed metal storage bins along both sides. There must be 100s of thousands of bottles there. Wouldn't be surprised if it was above 1m bottles. Quite cool and pitch black without the lights on and I'm very happy to store my wines there. Dave the owner was very helpful and happy to work with me on a pallet system where I bring wines in on a progressive basis. $11 per month per pallet is a great price. Getting access to certain bottles in your pallet would be the issue but for me I'm just storing a whole collection for a few months.
Thanks everyone for your advice.
