TN: Volpaia Chianti Classico 2017

Volpaia is a small but interesting village in Chianti which has been in existence since at least 1172. It owes its current popularity to a family that effectively owns the town (of approx. 60 inhabitants) since the 1960s, and operates it as a tourism venture, with wine and olive oil production (and sales), accommodation, tours, etc. The winery sources grapes from a range of vineyards in the immediate vicinity.

This Chianti Classico is 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot. A light purple red in colour, with sour cherries, red plums, raspberry and a little tobacco. There's some tannic grip on the palate, good acidity for freshness and a little alcohol warmth.

This is the baby of the range, yet the winemakers claim a 15 year lifespan. For me, it's a light lunch wine.
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.
