TN: Castle Rock A&W Reserve Riesling 2010 (Porongorup, WA)

Post by Waiters Friend »

G'day

Rob Diletti has been making wonderful Riesling (for Castle Rock and others) for quite a few years now. At 8 years of age, the colour on this one is still pale yellow - I've seen many current vintage Rieslings of similar colour. 11.5% alcohol, by the way.

The nose is citrus and florals - lemon, line, orange and lemon blossom, and a touch of talc. The purity of the fruit aromas is amazing. There's no kero and little sign of development on the nose. The palate has a touch of residual sugar, and a clean (but not sharp) line of acid - perfectly in balance with the fruit flavours.

There's no way anyone would pick this for an eight year old wine. On that basis, it's got at least another 10 years in front of it. Superb wine.

Cheers
Allan

Based on one of the 2013 vintage I opened recently from my cellar, I would agree with your timeline. it really does seem that those wines take a considerable length of time to develop. The 2013 was pale greenish yellow with almost no secondary development. Unless driven by need, I can't see myself opening another for the next 5 years at a min.
