Broken Glassware Dilemma

I am assembling a collection of ZALTOS with no base..
Bases are in the bin

Please help me !

If you have some remnant stem on both the bowl and the base, you can use a decent cork to join them together successfully, just push the stems into the top and bottom of the cork, might need to drill a small hole first. Chris H has done it in Melb. Not the same elegant solution as the original glass, but it works.

Are you hand washing them? If so, stop use a good dishwasher. If not,be more careful.

A mate got creative with a short piece of dowel, not quite as elegant, but worked!!

Hi Michel
Please check out my previous thread from the same experience. I kept the base and use a "silicone" nozzle to form/join together. Not exactly restaurant quality but at least you can have some good quaffing glasses for midweek drinking. Sorry about my photo bucket link - I will eventully work it out

Solution: Use Zalto for first glass (or bottle). When you have that late night inkling for a night cap move to Ikea glasses.

Ha! I know what you mean. Don't make the mistake I did once after a few bottles of Barossa's finest with the Missus in deciding the do the dishes at 2am. Lost 2 Riedel Vinum Cabernets. Mega pissed. Swore never to wash wine glasses in the evening or early hours of the morning.

Ugh. What happens to the food oils and lip marks on the rims and the resulting smears inside the bowl? By all means wash, just be careful. It's not rocket science.

I have one baseless zalto universal that has been sitting on the kitchen bench for about a month
The missus keeps saying "what are you doing with this damn glass, just let me throw it out"
I won't let her
It broke too close to the base to join
But I have other ideas
I just need time, like good wine

I rinse only in the evenings if it has been a big event or dinner... then I clean properly the next day as required.

Didn't stop one Reidel being obliterated by a falling bottle of dark, sticky soy sauce (which also exploded).... that was a fun thing.

Don't drop base down into a carry case of any sort...the stem is far to weak to deal w/ it if it is slightly off.

Which, apart from accentuating the characteristics of the wine too much, is why I don't like Zaltos that much. Happy with Riedel Veritas for me.

What happens though is you get used to the lightness and Riedels start feeling really clumsy...and you just accept the fact that you'll have some breakage and move on...

To be honest, it sort of sucks...Once you go that route, it makes it hard to use anything else but the reality is, I was just as happy with the many other alternatives Pre-Zalto...I'm not sure I'm any happier using Zaltos I just know I prefer them to whatever I was using before...

I don't disagree once you get used to a glass.

I think you'll find that the Riedel Veritas range is much finer than the Vinum range. We use Vinum for everyday stuff and Veritas for better wines/dinner parties/tastings ... they are not quite as fine as Zaltos, but do feel good to use.

Break it off a bit more, sand it down so it isn't sharp and stand it in a ramekin? Problem is you have to grab the bowl of the glass.

Schott Zwiesels are great...I quite like them a lot...they are exactly as you said...
Their Enoteca line, while obnoxiously big, for their size is light...probably in proportion to a Zalto...

But the normal size glasses still feel like beer mugs against Zaltos..thats the problem...

I will make a rest or holder for them
They will also be small enough to travel.

I broke two Zalto's the other night....

Having a few drinks with friends who live in KLCC.

Brand new complex, they are on the 32nd floor, everything above is a construction site.

We decided to climb the remaining 34 floors to see what was at the top.

I carried those precious Zalto's and a bottle of Bordeaux up everyone one of those stairs.

We got to the top, I sat the bottle and the glasses down to take in the view (no barriers built yet). Walking back from the edge I kicked glasses over and smashed them both....

Bordeaux from the bottle.

They were not my glasses.

Great night regardless.
