Launceston overnight visit - food & wine advice needed!

Hey all, travelling down to Launceston in a couple of weeks for some work on Friday, then Mrs TiggerK is joining me early Sat morning. One night in either Launceston or Hobart, then flying out of Launceston Sunday night.

Will have a hire car so a trip down to Hobart is possible and we're looking at 'must do food and wine experiences' with a bit of iconic Tassie scenery thrown in along the way.... lunch, dinner, brekkie, lunch and brief Sun night dinner in Launceston.

First time in Tasmania, so would appreciate any advice to help make the best use of time while we're there. Cheers in advance!

If you shoot down the east coast (not as direct as the central highway), and you have time, try some of the Milton wines. They seem to be doing some things right. They've been around a little while now, and appear to be getting a little more attention in recent times. Sparkling, Pinot Noir, and Riesling might all be worth sussing out.

Was the best restaurant in Australia IMO

Wine list is a bit funky
But food is all produce driven

If I'm seeking out a winery to revist it's Freycinet.
Bit out of the way but probably some of the best wines I tasted on the apple Isle.

We enjoyed Pooley. Make sure you try some of the Cabernet and Blend in Tas, they were the surprise for me.

Favourite spots in Launnie:

- Josef Chromy for a tasting followed by long lunch. Stunning pondside garden setting.
- Moore's Hill. Very friendly, excellent wines. The Riesling is excellent.
- The Mill (Restaurant, Providore, Gallery) in Launceston for dinner; seriously good food.
- Stay at The River House B&B in Dilston. Up on the hill with views across the river and valley:

PS if I had just 1 night, personally I'd focus on what Launceston and Tamar Valley has to offer rather than spend a number of hours behind the wheel.

Maralinga Wine Society did a bit of a Tassie tour last year. Started with Launceston and Tamar Valley, then did Freycinet en route to Hobart/Derwent/Coal River Valleys/Lark Distillery.

Black Cow and Brisbane Street Bistro were good for food in Launceston. Also enjoyed a really good pinot tasting at Tamar Ridge, quite a few other CD's as well. Lots worth trying.

PS If you wanted more scenery driving, I would skip Hobart and go to Freycinet (wineries) and back around the North-East for more Tamar Valley action!

Thanks for all the advice everyone!! Really helpful, and cheers odyssey, was hoping you'd pop up! So yes, going to keep it simple, do a few wineries in Tamar V (a few are closed for winter though sadly), focus on finding some good food from local produce, maybe a food market, cosy meal somewhere in Launceston (will check the above places) and save Hobart for another time. Chromy sounds like the go for lunch so far.

If you have time to drive out of Launceston, Delamere is worth visiting (about 40 mins).
There's a few other places nearby too, Bay of Fires, Pipers Brook, Janz etc if that sweetens the deal for M .
I wasn't a fan of a lot of wineries unfortunately, wines mostly average at ambitious prices.
Velo is in Launceston and they had a good oaked Chardy (the un-oaked one was muck). Moores hill as Andy says is worth considering, handy location, superb host and Rieslings were decent.

Agree with reccos on Chromy for casual lunch. Funnily enough we had a great tasting experience there a few years ago, wines were ok but the girl hosting was terrific. However we re-visited Delamere a year or so ago and she had just started working there.

Wineries we did recently were Delamere, Bay of Fires, Tamar Ridge, Holm Oak, Chromy (all good), Velo (average), Freycinet (excellent). Great pinot tasting at Tamar Ridge, but we organised that as a one off.

Hi everyone! Thought I'd revive this thread for some more up-to-date recommendations! Going to Launceston later in the year, but also hoping to get to a couple of wineries (have taken a break from wine for the past few months). What's worth visiting down that way?

My research is telling me any of: Dalrymple, Delamere, Ghost Rock, Holm Oak, Holyman/Stony Rise, Josef Chromy, Moores Hill and Tamar Ridge?

How about restaurants - any good recommendations?

Ghost Rock is much further west near Port Sorrel - worth visiting but not as part of a Tamar trip.

If you like Sparkling I recommend Apogee, (East Tamar) they also have a Pinot Noir and are close to Clover Hill - also sparkling.

Jansz, another sparkling house do a good tasting and are close to Delamere, as is House of Aaras/Bay of Fires.

On the West Tamar side if visiting Holyman, Marion’s is close by and well worth a visit

Restaurants in Launceston we enjoyed are Black Cow Bistro and Mudbar. But you can't go past Stillwater.

I can confirm the majority of the Tamar Valley wineries mentioned as well. I would also recommend Small Wonder and Moores Hill.
