November Offline - Sydney Part Deux: The Second Coming

Post by catchnrelease »

Hello all, so it turns out I will be in Sydney ever so briefly in late November. So I figured I would throw an offline up to the masses.

Theme: Interesting Australians - By that I mean Aussie wines that aren't the 'norm'. So forget Barossa Shiraz, Coonawarra Cabs, Margaret Chards and Yarra Pinots, how about we bring varietals that aren't as common, or normal wines from not so normal regions in Australia? Or maybe a non-Australian wine that's trying to be Australian? I don't want to (i.e. can't be bothered) write up a list of what is/is not "Interesting" - so I'll leave it up to you guys to decide. We may have to be a bit lenient on the theme with the sparklings and desserts, but here's hoping some of you guys have something weird stashed away.

For what it's worth, I'll be bringing a 2015 Ochota Barrels Botanicals and a 2008 Blue Poles Allouran/2015 Ochota Barrels Gamay/Seppeltsfield Grand Tawny.

My organising skills here in semi-rural Indonesia are limited, however, so I don't think I'll be able to organise a large 20+ person sitting like I've seen previously. I'll be setting a limit of 10-12 with location TBA - but most likely somewhere more laid back. Possibly Ashfield for duck and dumplings or maybe a pizza joint.

I'm hoping to see some regular faces but also some new ones too!

Gday Alex, count me in for this. Possibly a +1. it's a fair way off, so would like to put my name down and confirm closer to the date.

Sounds interesting :D I have a real nightmare of a fortnight at work in that period, so realistically could probably only do Friday the 27th. If that doesn't work then that's cool, I will as always look forward to the write up.

My dates are very flexible, it is a very long way off. Friday the 27th is probably the most likely.

In my enthusiasm I forgot we are flying to Hobart on the 26th. So if it is the 27th sadly we are out and shall have to raise a glass down South!

Updated guys. The date will very likely be the 26th/27th/28th as I'll probably be a bit busier in the early parts of the week.

Long way away, though. Any suggestions for food in the mean time? I'm thinking something in the Inner West area, near train station preferable. On the cheaper/more casual side of things.

I think Ashfield is best left for the Pinot nights. :D Also with 12 people I wouldn't guarantee any of them keeping a reservation for that big a group.

We've had some good offlines at Brio in Pyrmont, cheap, good food and very BYO friendly. Next to light rail station as well.

Or Rubyos in Newtown another goto-for-BYO venue for me.

I'll bring a 2012 of this wine, should be ironic flannelette (KrustyTM) enough? Clay Amphora - check, Nero d'Avola - check, Wild Yeasts - check....

Brash Higgins 2014 ‘NDV’ Nero d’Avola-Amphora
Grafted to our Omensetter Vineyard in 2009, this fourth vintage of the drought tolerant Sicilian varietal Nero d’Avola was picked at 13.5 Baume in 2014, earlier than the fulsome 2013, and back in line w the 2011 and 12 with 13.5% Alc. The transparency of the Nero d’Avola grape was preserved by using gentle, ancient techniques and naturally occurring wild yeasts. Same as the first three vintages, the grapes were destemmed then fermented and aged on skins for six months in locally made 200L bees-wax lined clay amphoras.

not sure what else...

Just giving this a quick bump to refresh peoples memories.

Date will be the 27th of November. Given Rootstock is on the weekend (woo!) figured it's the best date.

Update: Email sent to Rubyos for a booking. To anyone that hasn't been, it's decent food at a good price and they cater well for wine tasting groups. Large establishment and close to Macdonaldtown/Newtown train stations.

Updated update: Booking confirmed for Rubyos on the 27th at 6:30pm. They usually don't do BYO on Fridays but I mentioned our regularity and they made an exception. :D Corkage a very reasonable $5 per person.
