Colour on 05 Pinot
Colour on 05 Pinot
Hi All,
I am new to this forum. Great community, people and discussion!
I would like to ask some suggestion on what do you think/can tell from the colour of Victorian 2005 Pinot Noir i recently opened. The photos may show different colours, i can confirm they are the same wine.
Cellaring history is unknown, cork is fine looks fine anyway and minor sediment presents.
Thanks and appreciate your input.

Hi PNo,
What did it taste like?
Cheers, Travis.

Re: Colour on 05 Pinot
I think with pinots you can't really infer anything about the taste from the colour. I've had light pinots with more flavour intensity than some dark ones.
Re: Colour on 05 Pinot
Bottom photo looks ok - not necessarily because of the depth, but in terms of tone. Top photo looks like strawberry juice. Sure, it looks strange, but if it tastes good, then no worries!

Hi Travis,
It does not taste terrible however i don't think it's right either. I have never had/seen this colour previously, sure i understand pinot can be really light. This has a hint of brown and appears to be cloudy.
I am not an expert, sorry...so i am unable to be much more specific. I have had pinot i don't like, but this is just different. I wonder if this is the first fault pinot i have had.
Thanks for the comments guys.

Re: Colour on 05 Pinot
Very cloudy was the first thing that I noticed. Was the bittle left to rest upright before being opened?
Re: Colour on 05 Pinot
Top one looks very strange. Not just the possible fine sediment spoilage, but maybe a fault... but what fault I'm not sure.
Re: Colour on 05 Pinot
I've seen that colour in Mac Forbes and Pyramid Valley wines. I'm no winemaking expert, but suspect it's a potential result of certain 'natural' hands off winemaking philosophies. Usually the wine is fine, and often very good, but not always the case...
Judging a wine by it's colour is pointless. Why many judging panels allocate points to colour is totally beyond me, and nothing whatsoever to do with the quality of a wine.
What was the wine??

Re: Colour on 05 Pinot
I wouldn't worry too much about the color..
The cloudiness might represent a winemaking fault...or it could just be it was unfiltered..

Re: Colour on 05 Pinot
Diddy - no i did not rest it upright. i will do this on another identical bottle in a few weeks.
TiggerK - it was bass phillip 05. i had their 08 and it was one of the better pinot as many would expect.
I left some in the bottle and drank it again after 36hrs and it was bad enough so i threw that away...

Re: Colour on 05 Pinot
I think a lot of his wines are unfiltered so it can have that type of cloudiness.
If it was from some sort bacteria you'd probably be able to taste the problem....Generally this isn't a problem anymore..

As soon as I saw the top photo I thought Bass Phillip, as I've had one experience just like this. From the top photo the wine just looks like looks like its unfiltered.
These can taste a bit bacterial, and sometimes it comes off well. Not all the time though!

Was it that Phillip Jones Old Cellar is it? That always looked like that and tasted something like juiced fresh rhubarb.....
