Canberra Offline No.5 - Fri 22 August

Post by Duncan Disorderly »

Good people of Canberra

At the last offline I proffered the suggestion of having the next offline at Mezzalira, noting that they have a private room that could fit up to 10-12 people.

They have a five course tasting menu, attached, which is $85 per person. Insofar as wine is concerned I suggest that the first two courses are matched with two whites each, the next two courses three reds each, and the last course with two dessert wines, 12 wines all up, leaning to Italian wines/varietals if at all possible. Corkage is a reasonable, to me anyway, $15 a bottle - noting that they also have a fully stocked cellar, so all up we are looking at about $105-10 a head.

I was thinking that if people are interested we could also taste the wine blind.

As far as a date is concerned, I'm thinking Thurs 31 July or Fri 1 Aug, but I thought I'd gauge the level of interest first.

All welcome

Cheers

Lindsay and I can do the Friday. Looks good. Not sure what wines we will bring though as we don't have much decent Italian stuff.

Good for the Thursday or the Friday and the blind tasting bit.

Might have a Vin Santo style dessert wine and possibly a couple of other reds floating around :)

EDIT: have just been told today that I may be out of town for work that week. Will let you know as the details come to hand.

Cheers

Noting the overwhelming response, I think I'll do away with the Mezzalira concept for now. Happy, however, to meet for an informal drink towards the end of the month.

Sorry about replying guys, but I've been trying to get my head around the next month's activities. Alas, I'm out of action for about the next 5 weeks. Cheers, Travis.

Hey guys, newbie here to the forum (and relatively so to wine), but would be keen on this if anyone is still interested? I'm happy with anywhere in Canberra :)

Nothing happened...

However I, and I believe redstuff (possibly others) are always keen to meet new people when wine is involved. I'm out the next two weekends, but a lazy couple of glasses at a suitable BYO close to Civic on either the 15 or 22 Aug could be good.

For some silly reason I decided to sign up to Tough Mudder on the 15th August so the 22nd works perfectly, I'm keen!

The 22nd it is then. I'll choose a venue by the end of the week, but is everyone happy with 6.30 as I'm keen to go straight from work.

Cheers

I'm good for a 6.30 kick off.

Could always entertain the idea of a pre-dinner drink?

6.30 (or earlier for a pre-drink) works for me.

I have made a booking for 6.30pm on 22 Aug at Briscola, 60 Alinga St Civic http://www.briscolapizzeria.com.au. They offer a range of staple Italian fare at reasonable prices and are BYO with $9 per bottle corkage.

I was weighing up sticking with the original Italian theme, largely as I have a bottle of 2009 Fletcher Barbaresco that I'm keen to open. However as PDG notes that he is relatively new to wine I felt that a range of different flavours might be of benefit, so bring whatever you like.

I reckon that I'll be at the Wig & Pen from 5.30 for a quiet one prior to dinner if others would like to join.

Hey Canberra-ites, I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything from "dlo" lately, just noticed he hasn't posted anything on the forum for some months?

Don't think he's in town ATM. Might be doing a jazz sabbatical somewhere. Redstuff might know the full story.

Recently spoke to David and he asked me to mention that he has recently gone through a separation and is now playing Jazz and house sitting in Victoria. He will be back in a few months.

If you look back at previous Canberra offline's you'll see that people have brought along a fair mix of wines, which everyone has enjoyed. So on that basis just bring something your interested in, young or old, red or white.

My office is close by so I'll probably bring a red and a white and make a decision on which one to open on the basis of how many of each type we have.

Let's be honest  we usually drink everything we bring.

I'm red heavy ATM - plenty to choose from. Probably a bit 'pinot'ed out. Will bring a couple of different reds - something Australian.

Will catch up with you guys at the Wig.

I will probably bring a 99 st henri or a 2003 Wildduck creek estate springflat shiraz. Or both or maybe something served blind.

Sounds good.

Will bring an 03 st Henri to compare and a 94' wynn's Michael Shiraz for contrast. Will have something as a back up if either or both are stuffed. Might bring a mate along but will confirm closer to the night.

Looking forward to it.

Cheers
Matt
