1964 Kalimna

Post by sammy73 »

I have a few bottles of a 1964 Kalimna Cabernet labelled Crittenden Celebration Reserve Bin R.F.O. 32 Cabernet, Kalimna. I read on a Langtons newsletter that this is actually the same wine as 1964 Penfolds Bin 707 that was sold in bulk by Penfolds to Doug Crittenden who then bottled it under this label. Does anyone know if this is correct, or know anything about the history of this wine?

I tried this wine many years ago, somewhere around 1995 from memory. It was presented with exactly the same explanation to its history as you have given. it was very good indeed, and tasted incredibly youthful at that point.

I guess its going to be very attractive on the auction market this year at 50 years of age,

see page 84 of the latest Penfolds Rewards of Patience, confirms the Crittenden connection with the first vintage of Bin 707.

Sammy if your bottles are in good condition you have a wonderful (& valuable) wine there - if you do intend to sell/auction them, be sure to get the auction house to state the history/connection to the inaugural 1964 vintage of BIn 707. Crittendens put out an awful lot of very variable wines over the decades, and the vast majority of potential buyers would not have a clue that this wine is the same wine as in 1964 Bin 707.

Thanks very much for that info. That is great. I have too many for myself, so I am going to sell some of it.
