Pewsey Vale Riesling 2005

Post by Waiters Friend »

G'day

Having sampled a young riesling earlier in the week, I was in the mood for something with some age. Time to have one of my regular looks at an old favourite - Pewsey Vale. I cellar these (every vintage) up to 10 years, and I had not looked at a 2005 for a while.

Dark yellow but not quite heading into rich golden, and still pretty clear.

No kero on the nose (I think these are past that stage now, although some oher 2005s are not), but lots of lmon and lime cordial - not confected, but developed, with some honey.

Lemon - lime flows through the palate, as well. Acid appears to have diminished, or perhaps this is masked by the more rounded and fuller flavours. The finish is short-medium, and the cleansing finish of younger wines is not quite as evident.

Hard to define this wine. Has it reached itspeak, or just in transit to the next stage of development? I'm enjoying it, but not as enthusiastically as maybe the 2007 or 2008.

Cheers

Allan

I tried the 2005 Contours a few months back and thought it still very tight and lime cordial-like with plenty of acid to burn ... I wonder what relationship (in relation to style, concentration etc) the standard label and the Contours bear? A comparison I've never done side by side.

Thanks for the note.
Cheers,

David
