I finally have a wine cellar

Post by daver6 »

Thought I was share some pics of my newly completed wine cellar.

It is a small room off the laundry. Space was a bit limited so decided to go a PC15 Fondis for the cooling unit. For those not familiar, the cooling unit is built into the door. It comes complete with frame too. While dearer than a normal Fondis unit, I a) didnt want to waste wall space and b) the cost of getting through a brick wall was something I was keen to avoid.

Here are some pictures. Still need to move the wine into its new home.

you've done well. Post some pics when you've moved the wine in.
What's your capacity?

Those racks look amazing. Where did you get them if you don't mind me asking?

I purchased all through http://www.cellarack.com/ in Melbourne.

They were amazingly helpful and a pleasure to deal with. The racks were all shipped to Perth flat packed. I also had the insulation shipped too as I couldn't find the product I wanted locally. Its a BASF product called Styrodur which is only 30mm think but excellent insulation properties.

There were plenty of options for the wood finish too. I wanted the plainest/cheapest option and I think they look pretty good.

Capacity is mean to be 1000-1100. I'll do a count on the weekend. Would depend to some degree how the triangular bins are used though.

Pics with wine in to follow after the weekend, but I expect it to look a little sad with only 300 odd bottles to go in so far.

That's really nice...great job.....

Do you mind if I ask about how much it was to put it up? And what you think the monthly costs will run?

Hi Dave6
What are the internal dimensions. Did you put a vapour barrier in too?

Same racks as mine. They are great.

Don't mind at all.

By far the dearest bit was the cooling unit. Was $5200 delivered to my door. Racking $2400 delivered. Insulation (wall and ceiling) just under $500 delivered.

Haven't got the final bill from the installer, but expecting it to be around $1300 to $1500 roughly.

All up it isn't cheap. My other options were purchasing more fridges, but they are just as expensive and much more difficult to access wines. Couldn't be bothered with off-site storage. Call me lazy :)

Roughly 2.35m x 1.55m and 2.5m high.

No vapour barrier. Perhaps I'm ignorant/stupid, but I assume a barrier is to keep moisture out rather than in? If that is the case, can't see a need. It is an internal room in the house on the ground floor.

Still in the process of moving the wine in. I'm stuffed. Will definitely need a drink when done :)

Oh...realised I didn't answer the running cost question. Honestly, I have no idea.

The room prior to becoming a cellar stayed pretty cool and constant in summer. I'm not expecting it to be any more expensive than the wine fridge I was previously using.

Looking at the manual (poorly translated from French), it says the cooling capacity is 450 W.

Looks like the hot air from the Fondis will vent into the room/hallway (laundry?) outside the cellar. Any idea how toasty this is going to get in the middle of summer?

I've also used the cellarack system in my cellar. However I only purchased the black metal racks by themselves. I supplied and built the wooden frames myself to save a few bucks. The cellarack folks supplied all the necessary drill hole templates for me which made things very easy. Quite a cost effective racking system and a comparable racking density to the ubiquitous rebar system.

Correct about the venting. So far to cool it all down, it hasn't got noticeably warm in the laundry.

I don't think it will get too warm in summer either. The heat into the laundry is really just the heat entering the cellar (which is now well insulated) plus the efficiency coefficient of the cooling unit.

Hi David

Congratulations. Looks interesting. My father has the same racks, although I have not convinced him to take them out of his living room and place them somewhere reasonable :)

Cheers

Now that I have moved all my wine, I have my previously used Liebherr Grand Cru wine fridge sitting empty.

If anyone is interested in buying it off me, private message me for more info. Holds 312 bottles.

I am going through a similar problem - have a great room in a new (to us) house about the same size as yours but atm it cannot get below around 23 degrees (full brick and concrete, internal). Accept that this is summer but in Winter with heaters, don't expect much change.

Insulation

Like your thinking here, I also need something "thin" so I don't consume too much space. would you be able to share the supplier in Melb (I am Perth)

Cooling

This bit is stressing me out, but current theory is to go for a refrigerative unit like you have (my newbie theory here is that once cool, unit should not run more than 1-2 hours per day in summer). Was going to pursue locals (but they seem more industrial), found your thread and starting looking (once I got off the floor over prices)

Don't suppose you looked at the Koolr models (http://www.koolr.com/collections/coolers), they seem pretty cheap ($500) and from a quick read - do Celsius and 220V

cheers

Hi Greg,

I got everything through http://www.cellarack.com.au/ in Melbourne. I dealt with Jenni who was immensely patient and helpful.

I didn't look at other cooling units. The price of the ones you listed looks great! However, In my situation I didn't want to lose wall space to a cooling unit, so having it built into the door was perfect. However, in summer it does seem to run a lot though (more than 1 or 2 hours). Roughly costing me $2/day in electricity in summer and about half that in spring. Not had it long enough to see what happens in winter. I currently have about 350 bottles (I think rough capacity will be 1000 to 1100). I suspect with more thermal mass, things will improve.

I used a local guy to do all the installation. He has had lots of creating cellar experience and would be happy to recommend him too.

Send me a private message if you want his details. Also, welcome to swing past if you want to see what the racking etc looks like.

Understand, thanks for the info

This is not going to be a cheap exercise :) - the one I listed (Koolr) seems to get mixed reviews online (well, mixed might be a bit generous), have sent them an email to see if they will ship here

My plan is to proceed firstly with the insulation (need that anyway), already have a spot for the cooler (what ever that ends up being, will go for a "through wall model" or "split" as I have one small section that is to a shaded external area)

Will PM you for details of the insulation if that is OK (like the idea that it is thin, I can't afford the 50mm cool room stuff from a space point of view)

cheers

greg
