Old World vs. New World Pinot Sydney Offline.

Post by Hacker »

We have so far done Cabernet, Rockford, Henschke and now Wendouree offlines, all enlightening and great fun! I don't want to hog the choice of theme, so guys, what do you think for an August theme? And maybe we should really try for a Saturday night to appease those who can only make a weekend commitment?

I'll throw my hat in the ring with a pinot suggestion. Sure there are many other thoughts though..... 8)

Yep, not a Pinot in sight here in Chiang Mai, so I'm missing my old friend. I'll vote for that.

Burgundy vs New World $50-200 @ 5 years plus ??

Not too many Saturday's free in Aug though, could maybe do 3rd or 17th, can you do a Friday ufo?

What about Australian "vintages of the 20th century" such as 86, 90 and 98. They were all heralded at the time, much like most years in Bordeaux.

I like the iconic producers theme we are currently doing so will nominate Giaconda which has a nice mix of reds and whites.

Chardonnay, rousanne, Shiraz, Nebbiolo, Pinot etc

Any other ideas?

I'd actually be inclined for a white wine night..even though that might chase quite a few away...but really it is so we can all order something other than lamb/beef :).

Or a Cab theme? Maybe Coonawarra vs. MR?

I would be up for this. Most all of the themes sound fine to me although some are easier to source than others.

Cheers

Oops forgot about this, so much going on around me. So many suggestions above and we can feed from them for future offlines, but how about we run with tigger's theme of new world vs. Old world pinots, possibly with a flight of white burgundy vs Aussie Chardonnay as well?

We just need to set a date. Probably later August is better, but we can sort that out soon. Oh, and a venue. Nominations?

Yay, good theme! How about Friday 16th Aug?

Or Fri 6th September as backup....

Me being me, I'll bring a Kiwi or Aus Chard and a Kiwi Pinot.

Venue... Rocket always good, cosy and convenient, gets my vote. It's all about the wine after all! But always keen to try somewhere new, near a train line my primary preference.

Ufo, just to keep you happy, and I hope it doesn't disappoint any others, I'll suggest Friday 23rd August. Lets see how this date suits everyone. If not, 30th?

For restaurants, I'm thinking of the ones we normally frequent:
Fix St James
Rocket Chatswood
Bistro Fax
Ripples Milsons Point...did the Wendouree crowd think it was ok?

I have a Domaine Bart 1995 Gevrey Chambertin Clos de Beze to bring along. Drinking well now.

Cheers,
David M.

FWIW, I was impressed with the stemware at Ripples Milsons Point. Also, the location was good for those on the North and South sides.
I will find it hard to resist a Pinot Noir night, as long as it is not a Saturday or Sunday, and especially with an aged Clos de Beze on the table!

I must admit I liked Ripples too. One for another offline methinks. But Rocket at Chatswood is very good, and close to Chatswood station.
Adair, is Friday 16th August good for you?

Asked the wife for her "okay" but was shown a flier for a "Ladies Night" at our children's school on Friday 16th August!!!
Unfortunately school functions win over wine dinners... please, no judgements or assisting arguments, it was a huge war that I lost long ago. :)
If the date changes, I will be in. With 3 kids, it is unusual for me to have much scheduled in the evenings.

Would be keen on this, but will need to sneak permission from wifey.
Already doing a wine dinner on 9th, so realistically (for permission purposes), 23rd would be better for me too.

Cheers,

Monghead.

Ok, time for a headcount. From what I have figured, coming on the 23rd to Rocket are:
Hacker 1995 Domaine Bart Clos de Beze
Dave Vino
Michael R
TiggerK
Danny
ufo
Monghead
Adair
Polymer
Mivvy

Hopefully keep the numbers to 10. I'll update with names and planned bottles as we go. Hopefully a few red and white burgundies will appear in the mix :P Did I mention a small flight of white burgundy vs. Aus/NZ chardonnay might work as well?

Lots of tastings going on ... I think I’ll sit this one out. Helps that I’m not a huge fan of pinot or chardy.

Have fun guys, hope to see you at the next one.
