Bin 389

Post by manitobawino »

Hi all, Just got the new 2009 vintage of Bin 389 here in Canada and the price jumped from $40 to $62. Are they crazy!! It was an o.k. buy before but now I can get St Henri for the same price. Thanks - Rick

It's price in Australia has also gone up substantially. Same with Bin 407.

This is the equation. Solve for Penfolds

Penfolds = Dreamers
Number of Penfolds purchases this year = 0
Number of Penfolds purchases likely in the future = 0
407 Buyers = No Brains, no class

For $62 a bottle 389? St Henri is a better bet.
heaps of choice for that price.
Cheers

Compliments of the season to all...should have pre-booked a cab!!

You think that's bad, wait until you see the new price of the St Henri - it's gone up to $80 here in BC (from $55)!!

Strange going-ons Rick, here in Edmonton the '09 Bin 389 is about C$50 and the '07 St Henri near to C$80. This may be okay for those just beginning their wine journey but for those of us who have some in our cellars it's a big pass. For the price there are plenty of other wines I'd rather have.

Mahmoud.

The owners of Penfolds obviously are in it to make money - venture capitalists from memory... so I get it... But what is short sighted is the massive price hikes in truly woeful vintages such as say... 2007. This effectively amplies the brand killing impact, as it is no longer just a price equation. Someone will splash out for a $70 bottle as a special occassion wine - perhaps drinking Penfolds for the first time - and think 'this isn't very good', and move on to other labels... permanently. For all the (justified) criticism of the Bordelaise, at least the pricing policies are more closely aligned to vintage conditions.

Can't a rgue with any of these comments. If Penfolds wines were on the sharemarket trading at these prices I'd be a seller rather than a buyer. There are many other better value wines around.

Its lucky you are not in the market for a collection of Grange then :)

Have you seen the ridiculous price they are asking in the UK - something like 1.2 million.. I swear, they must have a donkey and a tail somewhere in the office that sets prices.

If they lined them up on a shelf in Harrods some rich fool would pay that for them.

I got 2 bottles of 2009 at a large retailer in my area for $50 each and 2 of the 2007 for $58 and while that is a fair bit over what I would normally pay for a bottle of wine ( I dont like to spend over $35 per bottle) I paid it so I could try it. Have not had any yet, the only Penfolds I have had to date is the 2006 Bin 28 Kalimna shiraz, It was a nice wine but at the price point there are a lot of wines I would buy before the Penfolds.
