Entry Level French Wines - Red

Post by Matt »

Hello
I have limitted knowledge of French wines, however I am seeking some recommendations on some entry level Burgundy and Bordeaux wines...Sub $100 (even better sub $50) and freely available in Australia. Something to rival a nice aussie cab sav would be a good start.
Thanks in advance.

There are some cheap-ish 2009/2010 Bordeauxs starting to hit the market. Poitevin, Lanessan, Caronne St Gemme come to mind. Clerc Milon would rival the robustness of aussie cab sauv.
For mid-range, I got the 09 Hauts de Pontet-Canet for $55EP, so I can't expect retail to be too far above that.

Potensac, Poujeaux, Puygueraud and Chasse Spleen usually pretty good bets. Faiveley Framboisiere for Burgs maybe?

Cheers

A lot of the wine mentioned are really 20 or sub 20 dollar bottles of Bordeaux in a competitive market place. They're 50 or so in Australia (although I'd expect these to come down a bit).

To me they stand up quite nicely to 30-35 dollar Australian Cabs...but they definitely do not stand up to 50 dollar Australian Cabs...of course this is just a general statement based on price...

We're seeing a lot more stuff being brought in at a competitive price though..so hopefully we start seeing the value Bordeaux wines coming in at sub 30 rather than 45-50. It should help push Australian Cabs/Cab blends a bit more...
