September 2012 Purchases

Post by Jay60A »

The calendar has ticked over ... and Auswine forum seems to still be THE place to discuss australian wine.

What have you been buying and tucking away? For me it's buying the classics at reasonable prices, as we head into a UK winter (cannot be that much worse than the summer, just no Olympics to cheer one up)

2 x Penfolds Henri Shiraz 1996
5 x Henschke Cyril Cabernet 2002
6 x Henschke Cyril Cabernet 2003

Mixed 18 bottles of Rockford... decided I should finally sign onto the mailing list so that one day I might be able to buy the BP without having to go to the CD each year in March/April... (although often the Easter visit home has meant this is not so difficult).

Picked up a mystery dozen of aged Tahbilk reds - a bit of a risk at $299 when I looked at JH's reviews but kinda exciting to buy a dozen wines with about 150 - 180 years of cellaring between them. Also 4 reserve wines and equal mix of cabernets and shiraz .

Where'd you get this Luke? Find it hard to find any decent Tahbilk reds in Canberra beyond the basic varietals/

They probably came from the wine club. If you jump on their website, it is free to sign up and they have these offers a fair few times in the year, and always a lot of back vintages available.

Greenock creek mailer arrived on Friday. So the usual:
3 Cornerstone Grenache
3 Cab Sav
3 Alices
3 Apricots.

Now just waiting for Roger Pike to send his mailer for the 2010's and I'm done for the year.

Let us know what you got, hope they didn't throw in the '07 Merlot, got the Mystery Merlot Reds Dozen couple months ago, liked the '08 and '09 nice quaffer Merlots wasn't impressed with '07.

Been member of Tahbilks since 2001 because Mum was member for years, seems to be somewhat of a family thing. Tahbilk makes some decent wines, sometimes it's a hit and miss on some of their wine specials. Last year opened 1994 Old Vines Shiraz been sitting at my oldies for years, very glad opened it, just prefect timing, couldn't be more happier at opening at the right time. Feel if it was cellared longer, it would have passed it's peak.

Goodluck. :)

Must have been a decent tax return! Better hope the ATO doesn't screen this site, they might decide to do an audit!

A few bottles of thousand candles..

Couldn't resist a cool climate Shiraz, Pinot, Sauvignon Blanc blend - sounds far too interesting to pass up!

(ordered yesterday, delivery today, I might add - impressive service too!)

After recent bottles, I decided to purchase more of the 2002 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne and 2002 Ruinart Dom Ruinart. Both absolutely superb champagnes that will drink sublimely until 2030+

3 x 2008 Patrick Home Block Cabernet Sauvignon
1 x 2003 Patrick The Caves Riesling

Also, we bought a couple of Meads from Dennis (it's one of the best in Aus, I reckon).
And a bottle of the St Agnes '7 star' brandy from Angove. I've had quite a few cognacs, and this is a serious contender for the best brandy/Cognac/Armagnac in that price range. I challenge anyone to find a better one (for under $100, anyway).

Nice List Cloth Ears.

I didn't mind the 2006 Patrick Aged Release Riesling, it's was nice, not too acidic, nice dry light bodied drop.

Australia Post is my friend. Some of the wineries sent them for nothing, and some for $10 a dozen. None broken and all were kept in the Delivery Centre until I could pick them up (after about 2 days). We did end up bringing back 2 dozen and some odds and ends in the boot of the car - but as the weather was so mild (only 2 days above 20) we weren't that worried.
