Post by rens »

It's half way through the month and I can not believe this thread has not been started yet.
So to kick it off, a mixed case:
3 x Teusner Avatar Grenache Mataro Shiraz (2010)

2 x Bay of Fires Pinot Noir (2010)

1 x Rockford Basket Press Shiraz (2008)

1 x Rockford Basket Press Shiraz (2009)

3 x Sons of Eden 'Kennedy' Gren/Shz/Mouv (2010)

2 x Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon (2008)
never underestimate the predictability of stupidity

Tahbilk 2002 Shiraz and Cabernet mixed dozen from the mailing list club at an excellent price

Bests Great Western Riesling 2011 x 6 (not motivated by the Halliday 97 score, more by the general acclaim and again a call from the cellar door)

Thanks

I think Halliday said the JCR shiraz would live forever. Now, I'm new to this game, but the damn thing is only just starting to come together after 5 days after opening and being kept in the (food) fridge.

At the $8.60 is this the best value cellarable wine ever?

Haven't had a JC Rsv for some time now and excellent price, less than the rgeular cost of the basic range but what variety was it? Good choices for the chards on vfm.

My pick was the 407 , excellent nose, great structure and fruit - a very good cellaring opportunity, pricey but I think the best 407 for a while.

I thought both the 138 & 128 were very good and to me the 389 was also impressive (had been open for a day as had the others which I think helped)

A dozen 2006 Barossa Valley Estate Ebenezer Shiraz
1996 Lanson Gold Label - yeah, I'm a sucker for it!
1998 Lanson Gold Label
2007 Seppelts Silverband Sparkling Shiraz
and a few cleanskins, the find of which was the black 'n' white label Frankland 2007 Shiraz Viognier. Quite heavy tannin, with lots of fruit and some old berry flavour, as well as breathable nose which shows off the taste before you get to it. Going to see if I can get a dozen of these for a few years down.

All from Dans

Really love it too, but about a 1/3 failure rate with the corks (750ml), a statistic backed up by the fine wine guy at one my of local DM's. Buy it and try it, and return it if needed!!

'92 Anderson Sparkling Shiraz
'95 Anderson Sparkling Shiraz
'65 McWilliams Sauternes
'82 Noble One

Have already popped one of the '92 Anderson's and it's in good nick. Funky and earthy and a little bit sweet, and still got some fruit.

It looks in good shape. It's got a foil cap which has signs of deterioration, but the fill level is good, and the colour is better (younger looking) than the 2001 release I had earlier this year. 750mL.
Check out the colour of the '65 Hardy's Sauterne ! It looks like it was just made !

Evening all,

3x Rockford BP '09
3x Rockford Alicante
Mixed box from Marius (mailing list offer) with an '06, some of the '08's and one each of the '10's.
2x Peter Lehmann Wigan '05
2x Bests Riesling '11
2x PHI Pinot '10

And a mixed box brought from the UK (one of each): Ceretto Barolo Brunate '03 / Talenti Brunello '04 / Podere Brizio Brunello '01 / Bolgietti Buio '04 / Marques de Murietta Grand Reserve Especial '95 / Vincent Paris Cornas 60 '05 / Belle Epoque '96 / Masi Amarone '03 / Armailhac '04 / Leoville Barton '02 / Sabon CNP Res '04 / Penfolds RWT '99. I know, bringing Penfolds from the UK sounds odd...but it seemed very cheap in £!

I can only hope the "better half" never finds this forum!

6 x 2008 Landhaus Shiraz Mourvedre
6 x 2009 Rockford Basket Press
6 x 2010 Jasper Hill Cornella Vineyard Heathcote Grenache

I bought the Jasper Hill just to try something a little different. I really enjoy Barossa and McLaren Vale Grenache, so I thought I'd try some from another region. Has anybody had any experience with the Jasper Hill Grenache?

Cheers
Ian

From the $10 Clearance Bin at my good friends "Please Come Again Liquor"

2010 Herzog Viognier. Awesome, these guys make some of the best Viognier in the country if not the best in my opinion

2007 Peller Estates Icewine Cabernet Franc. Niagara Canada. Know nothing about it but enough to know it was well worth a punt at $10!

and the big one...

2006 Inniskillen Riesling Icewine. Yip $140 in any shop that is sane, but for me today extra special $10, please come again

Who needs the Kwik-E-Mart, now here's the tricky part, oh won't you rhyme with me? Who needs the Kwwik-E-Mart?

You have got to be kidding me, $10 is crazy. Sure it's not filled with fake lolly water?

Bargain of the year if it's the real thing. Great wine.

P.S You still coming to Sydney in March Craig, or have you already been??

TN1: I'm just starting to experiment with Grenache. I've just bought Gotham 'Old Vine Reserve' grenache. I'm hoping for a rich, full bodied wine in the Penfold's style. A baby 138

Craig: I just bought 2009 Elgee Park Family Reserve viognier. Supposedly possibly the first viognier planted in Australia. I'm interested in the funky chardonnay-like style of viognier (and viognier-like chardonnay  ) Have you tried this? If so, how do these 2 viogniers compare?

haha yes after todays herald article. Well the $25 2000 Stonyridge Larose I got from there was the real thing...drank it. Was one of the most memorable wine drinking experiences I have ever had, the price made it even sweeter.

New World. To be totally honest Pinot Gris, Viognier etc I have little to do with (especially NZ and Aussie examples). Its too rich/ perfumed and heady for my liking usually - tough going in the glass. And Gewurztraminer makes the same food matches and I prefer it. I have tried a few Aussie ones that were not too shabby. Yalumba and the like. Prefer a good chardonnay though

From NZ Herzog is class, sophisticated white wine - vinous. Also have had a couple of excellent experiences with Villa Maria Omahu and Te Mata Zara can be ok some vintages though I tend to prefer that smack on when released.

Craig. I much prefer chardonnay, but I'm just trying to broaden my horizon.

Gwertzshtramilinerzs. Hmm. There's a controversial varietal. I tried Spy Valley from your neck of the woods recently and was converted. What a match for Asian food!
