Best wineries in Orange...

Post by sjw_11 »

So spur of the moment Im going to Orange this weekend to get out of town. I reckon I can probably drag my partner to about 2 or 3 wineries max before she'll draw the line... any recommendations?

Off hand I was thinking Bloodwood and Phillip Shaw, can't claim to have tried a great deal of wine from local wineries (more with Orange fruit made by wineries elsewhere)

cheers

Recently called into Printhie and was pretty impressed with some of their wines. It is more on the way to Forbes though.

Go to Conobolis Smith.
Try their Alchemy.

Even Phillip Shaw will tell you how good they are.
(I spent an hour gas bagging to him once. Nice guy).

This query has been asked elsewhere before - for what it is worth my answer to that was:

Have not drunk a lot of Orange wine - have generally been disappointed when I have, but I did like the Printhie wines when I tasted their range a couple of years ago. Other wineries that come to mind that I have heard some positive things about are Phillip Shaw, Bloodwood, Brangayne of Orange and Cumulus.

Other wineries that seemed to get some recommendations were Logan and De Salis.

Logans Wines have spent a bit of money on their estate /cd/ etc. It really is very impressive with the view ambience and the like. Wines didn't excite me as much.
We stayed at Borrodell Vineyard over Easter. [About 10 mins out of Orange] Again a very impressive location[ altitude around 1000m] fantastic views etc. Wines were all very cool climate varieties.

On the whole the regions wines are not exactly ground shattering but.....

Both places worth a look.

I have had a few of the Belgravia wines and always found them quite nice. The 04 Reserve Shiraz was a brilliant wine. They have a cellar door that is always open and their wines are reasonably priced. There is also a wine bar right next door.
If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?

Mayfield have a dynamite riesling vineyard, and make some pinot noir, sauv blanc, and chardonnay that all seem to get good press. I haven't tried their wines myself recently , though.
Smack my [insert grape type here] up !

Thanks for all the tips guys.

Ended up trying some wines from Belgravia (Reserve 2002 Cabernet was nice and atypically rich for such a cool climate, and at $34 in the Union Bank wine bar was a steal - worth a visit for a drink and Charcuterie plate), Phillip Shaw (excellent wines, vines planted in 1988, although their top wine the No 5 didn't impress as much as their Pinot and Shiraz Viognier, and also visited Orange Mountain Wines on the basis we drove right past it, nice enough wines but nothing to get too excited about.

That's funny. Last time I was at Canobolas Smith, Justin was telling me how good the 2009 Phillip Shaw 'The Idiot' shiraz was.

Canobolas Smith and Cargo Road are my two favourite Orange wineries. They just happen to be neighbours too, so if you go to one you might as well go to the other.

I love cooking with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food.
