April 2011 - what have you been buying?
April 2011 - what have you been buying?
The local BottleO and Celebrations outfits had Wynns Coonawarra Cabernet for sale at $26 for 2 (yeah , that's $13 each). I managed to track down 21 bottles (2x2001, 3x2002, 5x 2006 and 11 of the 2008) before they twigged to the fact that someone had painted the label black on the brochure rather than green (in fact I did better at Dan Murphys and 1st choice than the aforementioned groups just getting them to match prices!). Dan Murphys even reduced the price of their 12 to $12.50 a bottle!
Apparently the next day there was a retraction in the paper......
I also bought a sampler carton (6) + a couple of 2007/2009 bottles of Lowburn Ferry Pinot from Central Otago while the exchange rate was $1.36 to our dollar. If you haven't tried this wine, it takes my pick of the CO pinots and is only $37 delivered to your door with the current exchange.
After the Penfolds last month, I think I'll concentrate on paying some bills
Cheers
Luke

Nice work Luke. I still think of this as pulling a Mahmoud...... I think this is a case of caveat venditor!!
Is the Lowburn Ferry the 'story wine' you bought to the offline last year. That was seriously good plonk (this coming from a non-pinotfile). Was the $37 including shipping etc or were you over there fighting with the Mayor again?

Hi Michael
The wine I took to the offline was the 2007 Lowburn Ferry. I haven't tried the 2008 or the 2009 but the Jan/Feb Gourmet Traveller Wine mag rates both of these highly and the sampler pack is 2 bottles of each of the 07,08 and 09. You can add an extra 2 bottles without paying more for delivery (or u can get a carton of 15 if u have lots of $$. The $37 was the price delivered to ur door and taxes paid).
No, I haven't been back but am tempted when I see one of the airlines offering $99 each way at the moment.
Cheers

3 x 2008 Marius End Play
3 x 2008 Marius Simpatico
3 x 2007 Henty Estate Shiraz
6 x 2010 Grosset Watervale riesling
month is shaping up nicely..
I'm jealous of all the Lowburn Ferry love - I went long on the 2006, and haven't found much to love in any of them yet.

Re: April 2011 - what have you been buying?
A local online merchant giving some reasonably good deals, so I bit...
- 01 x 2002 Wild Duck Creek Springflat Shiraz
- 01 x 2003 Wild Duck Creek Springflat Shiraz
- 06 x 2009 Wild Earth Pinot Noir (Central Otago)
Can anyone give me some impressions of the Springflat shiraz?
I know the "Duck Muck" can be a polarising wine, what about its stable-mate?

I've only had the '99 and it was stunning with plenty of life left. I have one bottle left and am saving it for a special occasion, that is how good it is. Not a big style at all, quite restrained but still packs a velvet punch, if that makes any sense. One of my favourite wines ever.

Re: April 2011 - what have you been buying?
Three bottle sample pack from Blue Poles
Three bottle sample pack from Marius
(haven't tries either sampler yet but great initiative & value from these producers)
Two Sicilian wines today - don't have details handy (mid $30 each)
Will probably get some (affordable) riesling and pinot or shiraz soon. Probably a couple of 2006 Yalumba Signature in time too.

Nice work Luke. I still think of this as pulling a Mahmoud...... I think this is a case of caveat venditor!!
I found a few bottles of '05 Black Label for C$13.50 a few years back. It wasn't a "Mahmoud" as it was a sticker price.
But, a few months ago, whan I was at home in Edmnonton I did pull another "Mahmoud". I was at a store where they had an LBV Port for sale at over C$100. I knew this to be wrong so I went to the till and asked for the price. The person at the till said "It's a $120". I told him it was an LBV and shouldn't be so expensive. He said, with a shrug, that it was what the scan showed.
I took the bottle back to the shelf and noticed that the 2000 Quinta do Noval had no price sticker. I took this bottle to the till and asked the same person about the price. He said "$33.50". I said "Okay, that's more affordable, I'll take it."
"Pulling a Mahmoud", that's what wine buyers live for.
Cheers....................Mahmoud.

couple 08 Turkey Flat SHIRAZ.
Box of 389.
Couple Moss wood Amy.
Couple 707.
Couple of the George Wyndham specials.
Cant fit cases in my collection of wine anymore.
Never understood how you guys could just grab a couple here and there.
Now i get it.
I can't drink them as fast as i store them anymore.
With the influence of a woman i wish to spend the rest of my life with i have chosen to buy less and drink less.
But i figure i can share more and drink better.
win win.

Re: April 2011 - what have you been buying?
From auction a box of 2005 Punters Corner Cabernet. Needs time and should improve.
Stayed a few days at a mate's olive grove at Watervale helping out and consuming fine food and some old Clare rieslings, some nice aged shiraz and a passed it 1983 red. On the way home took at different route and ended up at Eldredge Estate on the western slope of the Clare Valley. The '10 Riesling is good as is the '06? Malbec. Took home a box of '06 Cabernet cleanskins. Nice bottle age. A good Tuesday wine.

Good work lads, whilst I feel guilty just for a second......the big boys can cope with a few losses. Picked up 2 dozen Penfolds Bins last week and the nice thing was that the 08 389 came through at the SAME price as the 08 28!!
Thanks for coming....

I got a reasonable Mahmoud deal.
The bottle price on the 08 Wynns Black Label was $64.
I got them for $33 because i asked nicely.
Turns out slipping a bottle from the cellar not available in the state was a good thing

Couple more Turkey Flat Shiraz.
Couple Leasingham bin 56,
A green labled Deutz(?) Shiraz which was yummy.
An Olivers Tarranga 07 Shiraz which was a bit yawn.
and a Cabernet whose name escapes me that the bottleshop guy said was well and truly worth the gold medals stuck on it for a change.

Re: April 2011 - what have you been buying?
Today, Larry Cherubino's Ad Hoc Pinot 2007. Normally (and allegedly) $25 a bottle, but 3 for $45 at the bottle shop underneath my new place of employment (in Fremantle).
I bought 3 (of course). Stopped by a friend's house around 4pm today, so took one in. He immediately picked 'dark cherries' and I agreed with him. He has probably finished the rest of the bottle by now (I hope). I have opened the second bottle now and will finish it tomorrow. Not textbook pinot, and certainly not Tasmanian in weight or texture. At $25 a bottle I would look for Victorian / Tasmanian, but worth getting at $15 at my local in Freo.

Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.
