Noon Winery 2010

Post by Deano »

I normally take the wondeful trip to MV to visit the delightful Noon winery; cellar door opening for a few weekends every November.
Has anyone been this year to comment on maker, wines, cellar door, changes...etc?
Cheers

Hi Deano

Didn't go to the cellar door (I live in Brisbane), but got on to the mailing list this year so put my first order in. I have tried the 12 Bells and it is cery good, with ridiculous QPR. I can't compare to other vintages, but very happy.

Cheers

I think they would have definately sold out by now??

The Reserve cab was very nice but a bit challenging and green at this stage for me, come back in 3+ years and it'll be great. The Reserve Shiraz was beautifula nd pretty much good to go and the Fortified one (cant recall the name) was great on the front end but ruined IMO by alcohol heat on the tail. Eclipse wasnt made in 09 I believe??

Thanks rosewaterwrx. I only got two each of the reserves and probably would have tried one of each (there was a limit of 3 bottles anyway). I can now hold off on the first Cabernet for a few years. I think you are right about the 09 Eclipse.

Many thanks

Drew Noon has had a wretched couple of years. The 08 vintage was disaster for him with his Shiraz and Cabernet both being wiped out by the heat wave. He only produced the Eclipse that year and if memory serves me correctly it was not the normal blend (some cabernet in it). In 09 his Grenache crop was basically wiped out by the November heat wave, so no Eclipse for that vintage (and hence the limited 12 Bells). I spoke to him recently and he is very enthusiastic about his 2010 release wines.

As for the wines, I don't touch mine for at least 5 years normally. The last reserve wine I had was earlier this year and was a 2005 Eclipse. Stunning wine that I feel will age for many years. I had a 2002 Solaire last year and it was amazing. Can't remember tasting notes but can remember at the time cursing that I only have 2 more. I have also tried the 2008 Solaire and it was a shame to open this wine. It is a massive wine that will need minimum 5 or 6 years in the cellar. I have always cellared the 12 Bells for a couple of years as well. I had the last of my 2006's earlier this year and it was simply the best $10 bottle of wine I have ever had. The 2007 needs a few hours in the decanter to open up a little, but once it does it is also stunning for the money. I haven't tried the 08 or 09 yet.

If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?
