2002 Leasingham Classic Clare Shiraz
A nose of leather and liqueur cherries. Savoury palate of cherries and red earth with some barnyard. Lengthy finish with moderate tannin present. OK wine. From the bottle of the pile in a passive Sydney cellar. Perhaps an early warning for others if they don't like brett to keep them cool.

cheers

1998 Seppelt St Peters Shiraz- What a glorious, complex, earthy, spicy shiraz of immense power, yet indelible balance and elegance. Wow. Extremely Good.

Found this in the home cellar (aka spare bathroom), and thought I'd give it a showing tonight. Having arrived at this epiphany, I had to see what I had left in the cellar. Some '98s and '01s........ Seem to remember this as a dependable, and delectable wine. What has happened to my 99, 00, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06 vintages? Did I even buy any? Why have they fallen off the radar??? Hmmm... must rectify... :?

Great call. I adore this wine. For some reason I picked up a case and a half when it came out. I recently opened the first case and now can't keep my hands off the stuff. As you said the earthy complexity makes it incredibly moreish and yet for some reason no one really seems to pick up on it. Thankfully I also kept up with the subsequent vintages until 05, an omission I intend to rectify quite soon.

2007 Zilliken Saarburger Rausch Riesling Kabinett I opened one of these 6-12 months back and was really disappointed given the reputation of the producer. At the time the wine appeared flabby and overly sweet with no discernable structure. Thankfully tonight's bottle was much more enjoyable. This time around the apple and honey melon flavours with a hint of wild honey have started to take on new depth as the colour of the wine is just starting to move out of the pale pale green phase. Overall a lovely wine

1997 Tignanello - perhaps my favourite vintage of Tig, alongside the 2004. Drinking nicely. Elegant and long and has quite a few years left.

1991 Penfolds St Henri - after the 86, my favourite from this label, though there has been a bit of bottle variation. Rich, refined and pristine fruit with a finish that lasts till tomorrow. No rush to drink up.

You know what I may have done... I think I have stocked up on the cheaper and I guess more bang for buck Chalambar- every vintage since 2000 in reasonable quantities...

That St Peters was so lovely though, I think I'm going to have to back-fill.

I enjoyed a few bottles when it was basically on current release but never got around to putting some aside. Pleased to know it's travelling well. It seemed to be generally well-regarded.

It was a few weeks ago but anyway, I shared my last bottle of Turkey Flat cab 03 for my niece's 40th birthday. It was bloody nice....another very good Barossa cab.

I think in good vintages the Cabernet particularly ages well for 5-10 years. Better than the Shiraz (though this is a better wine on release IMO). Both good QPR. Note to self to start putting 6 of these away each year.

Lots to drink this week. On holidays so have made the most of it:
2008 Wynns Shiraz x2. Glad I had two bottles. The first didn't do it for me. two days later I had another and think it was good. I can see what people like about it.
2008 Grower co-op Pinot Noir This is a great little pinot-my wine guy put me on to- with nice balance and good quality fruit. At $9.90 a bottle this is the best Pinot in QPR terms I've had in many years.
2008 Adelina Shiraz Medium bodied Shiraz using good quality fruit. It's no secret I like Adelina and this is why.
2005 Peel Estate Zinfadel This is a big boy and it packs a big boys punch. I like my wines big and this delivers with nice fruit complexity and spice with that typical peel acidity on the palate.
2006 Teusner Avatar Another Quality wine from Teusner. Uses quality oak and great fruit to pruduce this generous mouth filling wine. Yum!
2008 De bortoli Vat 1 Durif Another Bigish wine that 'punches above its weight' (excuse the parkerism). Another sub $10 bottle that delivers. Good quaffing as the days and nights get colder.

Add to this about 100 Litres of Bintang and some Local 'wines' (I use the tern loosely because they were very, very ordinary) whilst in indonesia and I probably haven't been walking straight my whole holiday
never underestimate the predictability of stupidity

2001 Ladbroke Grove Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot "Compadres Blend"
Marred by a slight cork failure, However not so much as to take away from the synergy of the blend. Fresh ripe rasberry/ cherry notes with hints of spice intermingled with a delicate subframe of mocha overlayed with cassis and violet. The Merlot component fleshs out the wine giving it a soft juicy mouthfeel, which is emboldened by the powerful structure of the Cabernet. Tannin structure still has some power, with a slight dusky end on the tail of the pallette. All in all a lovely wine that still has a fair few years in front of it.
Asleep in a gutter somewhere!

2006 Paringa Estate Shiraz- Ripe berries and dark chocolate. Big and blousy, angular finish without much complexity. Just Good.

The only wine I've had this week that's worth mentioning is Pennys Hill Red Dot Shiraz 2008. It's been priced at $17, $13 and $10 at the barn, this week the latter and a bargain for a Vale shiraz with great regionality. I used to relish Seaview shiraz.
