Mudgee Visit - Recommendations

Post by Red »

Will be in Mudgee for a few days in a few weeks time. Any thoughts out there on good cellar doors to visit?

Cheers,

G'day,

There are some fantastic boutique wineries out at Mudgee,

One that I do highly recommend is Moothi Estate winery, www.moothiestate.com.au, its just off the Castlereagh Hghwy before town.
Fantastic family owned winery. Quite a new cellar door which overlooks the Vineyards and Mudgee. Try the '03 Shiraz and the '03' Cabernet Sauvignon. I bought several cases last time I was there.
Tasting notes for the Shiraz.
' Moothi Estate Shiraz 2003 - Tasted 26/02/2010. Fantastic nose with hints of Clove spice and Dark Cherry. Well rounded Palate with a Full mouthfeel, flavours of Plum and spice. Good length on the finish' - One of the finest examples of a Mudgee Shiraz I have tasted in many years.

One other I recommend is Farmers Daughter which is on the otherside of town.

I really recommend Mudgee wines to everyone, I think its a hidden gem 'Mudgee' that people need to open up to more. They have a fantastic food and wine festival run all thru September called "Go Grazing".

If you do get up to Moothi Estate tell them Mat from Sydney Recommended them to you.
They know me quite well.

Cheers

Mat

I'll second the Moothi recommendation, though I should declare an interest: a friend's parents own it. I won't say anything about the wine but I can assure you they have about the best views in the region.

The other two wineries that really stood out for me were Logan and di Lusso (the latter in particular for Italian varietals, which I think Mudgee as a region should try a bit more - they tend to be quite successful). Huntingdon is also pretty good with some excellent QPR.

Thanks guys. I'm planning to go to some of the better know wineries like Robert Stein and Robert Oatley, but its great to hear about a small winery like Moothi that i honestly don't think I've heard of before. Will definitely pay them a visit!

We visited the following:

Lowe - already knew the people who run this place as my parents used to work with them. good wine, great people

Huntington estate - was a bit of a disappointment...the wines are nothing like they used to be.

Loue wine - funny little place off the beaten track. wines were ok but had a blast with the girl who was conducting the tasting

Oatley wines - so so, but lunch was good

Logan wines - great looking cellar door, a real peice of art work...and their wines weren't bad either. try their bubbles, it was the pick of the crop from memory.

Thistle hill - another small place, wines made by David Lowe from memory, some good stuff.

There was one other place, can't think of the name, its in a old style wooden cottage, near thistle hill...nice booze aswell, try their petit verdot.

Have fun, mudgee is cool.
