Tonight my wife is having a night out with the girlfriends and I am home looking after our bub. This means I can cook something I want to eat, but my wife would not normally eat. Therefore the menu tonight is Braised rabbit in red wine on polenta. I am braising the rabbit in a bottle of St.Hallett Gamekeeper's Reserve. With the rabbit I am going to drink the Primo Estate Il Briccone Shiraz Sangiovese which I also had last weekend & loved it. So savoury and food friendly. I must say that the Gamekeeper's Reserve is my all time best bang for buck, drink any night with almost anything, calling into a bottle shop on the way to a BBQ, just for the hell of it bottle of red. Some may disagree, but for me it is always a no brainer.
An observation, redwine: over the last year you've only ever posted in the "What are you buying" monthly threads (with one exception of a post in the "wines of the year" thread) and your posts are usually a long list of extremely expensive wines. You've not posted TNs on these wines though, or contributed to any other threads, which seems a shame, given the wine you own.
The interest of this thread to me (and as originally instigated by Craig) is that its revealing to see where people put their hard earned cash - if you can only afford a small slice of the action that you'ld like to get in on (like most of us), what you choose to buy must be what you really rate. But if money is clearly no object and you spend many thousand $$ every month on aged french grand crus, I'm less sure what the point is.
I hear what you are saying, but this is an internet forum and people can, within reason, post what they want. If redwine just wants to post what he buys, that's his or her perogative. You could do what I do: see that s/he is listing a number of wines and move past it. Otherwise you may be letting the actions of others, over which you have no control, frustrate you. I think we are actually quite lucky in this forum that there aren't many offensive or annoying posters (apart from me) now that Serge has left.

Just my 2c
Cheers

You're quite right, of course, Michael, and I didn't mean to imply that redwine cannot post whatever he wants - not my call of course. Just exercising my right to provide my perspective. Sometimes I just can't help myself - I never was great at counting to ten... but will try harder.

Bick, point taken.
Just to give you a bit more background. These wines are not my "normal" drinking wines (that's more in the range of 20 - 40 AUD). I mostly buy these wines at very good prices which are well below the market price, e.g. the Grange 96 I got for about AUD 230 or the Lafite 95 for about AUD 360 (doing a lot of research and shopping around). So from time to time I also sell the one or the other bottle, specially where I have bought more than one. This normally allows me to get all my investment back and in most cases even make a nice profit on top. This way I can almost fully "finance" these wines and allow myself to drink them from time to time. The reason why I do not post more is that I just do not find the time and sometimes I simply forget to do so. The other reason is that many of the wines are still in my cellar and therefore there is nothing to post.
So I hope the other readers of the thread find it interesting what wines are still around in the world otherwise let me know.
Redwine, I reckon that's a very fair and civil answer to a fair and civil question. Must admit, Bick's question had not occurred to me, though I became curious after he posed it. If only the whole world were as respectful as this forum !
I like to see the list of wines available in different parts of the world, please keep posting. Though I make an effort from time to time to share some thoughts on wines I try from time to time, I also find it increasingly difficult to post regular TN so I understand where you are coming from. What depresses me is how much cheaper these wines are in your part of the world.

and don't forget me!!
As for me my buying theme is simple at the moment; stock up on some of the brilliant and well priced Hawkes Bay 07's before the 08's are inflicted upon our tired souls. As such 07 Church Rd Reserve Cab Merlot at $26 at FT/WW/CD this week was the ticket to add a few more.
Above that school fees, uniforms, stationary, camp fees etc etc evaporate my spending money faster than i can squeeze it out of my employer

BTW: Logan Brown in Wellington was STUNNING. World class food.
Yep, fully agree, & BYO on Sundays, which we take full advantage of.
For me:
3 x '07 Stonecroft Syrah 3 x '07 Stonecroft Old Vine Chardonnay 6 x '06 Bell Hill Pinot Noir (after finding them the pick of the wines tasted at Pinot 2010) 2 x Stonyridge Larose '08 3 x Dry River Lovat Gewurtztraminer '09
nice buys there peter! i still haven't tried a single sip of bell hill. must do sometime, just haven't had a chance as yet. 08 srl is probably a must buy too!

Redwine should be able to post whatever s/he likes. I often salivate over these lists, and I look forward to any TNs of these wines when they are consumed.
It's almost like Redwine recently discovered the joys of wine, and has a somewhat generous budget, and spends all day filling out the cellar. Man, I want that job...
Triathlon is proving expensive, and drinking red wine in the usual volumes not conducive to training
yeah know the feeling. I am down to drinking one day a week only with a lot of running/ training going on. it helps too i must say. drinking and discipline are not close friends

I really only decided to do Febfast to support my homeless, between housesitting jobs, best friend house guest. I've already made a mental note to demand that she finds a housitting gig for next February or the whole thing is off, regardless of the fact that she feeds the dog and does all the ironing (including the teatowels)...
I reckon we've spent about as much as we normally spend on booze on Turkish Apple Tea, and there are so many swing top bottles of it made up in the fridge that there's not much room left for food. I think the strategy is to make sure there's so much of it swilling around that we couldn't even contemplate trying to find room for a skinny little Riesling.
To add insult to injury (or injury to insult), I'm training so much the running cramps are setting in, so the only other liquid of note passing my lips is pineapple flavoured Endura, which tastes like very poorly disguised second hand sweat mixed with a melted Pine Lime Splice. It's not cheap, but it sure is nasty.
Roll on March - I'm going to buy something nice to eradicate the horror..
From Bibendum in their sale. 12 x Howard Park Cabernet Merlot 1994 6 x Howard Park Cabernet Merlot 2004
1994 should be interesting, always wanted to try, and a case came up at about $60 aud a bottle which is pretty fair though I'd have been happy with six. Best Australian cabernet of the 1990s (or Block 42 1996, or Cullens 1995?) 2004 is silly money for the quality ($40 aud) and reflects general disinterest for australian cabs in the UK.

What do you make of the new Vasse Felix cabernet? I've got one but haven't tried it yet - planning to use that as the basis for deciding how many to get, but would appreciate any other views.

Haven't cracked one yet. I was going to let them sleep for a while. The 2005 was perhaps the nicest cabernet i'd had in my early days so much so that I grabbed a case. I gave the 2006 Margaret River Reds a bit of a wide berth (whites however are a different story). Back on board through with the '07s - bought on spec rather that any tasting/recommendation.
I'd also be interested to see how this is shaping up if anyone cares to share
