I find myself on short notice visiting Auckland for a couple of days this week. I'm just wondering if you can tell me, is it possible to buy Puriri Hills Pope at retail? Sorry if this is an ignorant question and there is a Wendouree-esque allocation. Looking for other Bdx blends otherwise.
Otherwise, any retail stores or winebars you can recommend in Auckland?
Thanks

The 2010 Pope is available retail which is drinking magically at the moment. I had a glass in the weekend. I think in a couple of years time the 2010 will be entering its peak. Great Little Vineyards has it, Glengarry may have it and Fine Wine Delivery Company may have it. The 2013 is only available to mailing list club members at the moment. It will probably be released in a year or two retailWillard wrote:Hi Craig,Craig(NZ) wrote:Spending money like water this month and sad to admit its all local stuff, but it is good local stuff

Went to a "first in the world" tasting of all six Popes ever made a month ago. Only three have been released. To summarise really quickly; to drink today in order 08,10,13,14,05,15. I think if drinking at their peaks the order will end up being 13,14,15,10,08,05
I assume you are staying in the city. Glengarry at Victoria Park is the best shop in the city by far. Wine Bars um Wine Chambers in Shortland St. If you like fine whisky try Jeffersons in Fort Lane

A-huh! I have already bought 2017 Florita, as well as Petaluma's Hanlin Hill, and Pewsey Vale's 1961 Block Riesling
so that pain has already been and gone............ but the Merle.... hmmmmm
Re: June 2018 Purchases
Thanks Craig, I appreciate the info, I’ll track down a ‘10. Yes staying in the city so not too far to wander to Glengarry there.Craig(NZ) wrote:

Hi Will, hope you are prepared for some sticker shock! The Pope is made in very small quantities and held back until Judy decides it is ready to be released.Willard wrote:Thanks Craig, I appreciate the info, I’ll track down a ‘10. Glengarry has the wine, but not in store according to this listing. You may wish to contact the Victoria Park store and ask them to get some for you. The fine wine manager is Regan McCaffery (regan@glengarry.co.nz ) and he probably is the best person to contact.

Hi Brodie,
Yes, I had found the Glengarry listing and I admit there was a little sticker shock! I may try one of their lesser (!) wines to start with. Thanks for the contact, appreciate it.

Re: June 2018 Purchases
Yeah that's a crap price. I've seen it on special for as little as $120 not too long ago. $150 is really the max you should be paying but yes price is pushing up on this wine. No doubt it will soon be one of the few NZ wines sneaking into the $200+ category. Fine Wine Delivery Company is usually the cheapest on PH but they have no Pope on the website at the moment with is surprising actuallyWillard wrote:Hi Brodie,

Re: June 2018 Purchases
I tried the Florita at a tasting in Paddington. I must admit I had the Grosset Polish Hill ahead of it at the big end of town in the tasting and the Crawford River 2016. It is one of the best young Polish Hills I have ever tried. I would also love to add the Merle 2017 based on the standard Pike Traditional 2017. So far I have a case and a half of the Traditional tucked away and would happily add another 12 pack.Mike Hawkins wrote:Florita and The Merle are both winners... sorry for spending more of your money!Rossco wrote:Kicking myself i only got 3, but I will take them!

Probably the best young PH I have tried. Amazing depth of flavour. I see why some of the local critics were giving it really high 90 scores.Mike Hawkins wrote:I love the 2017 PH too... bought multiple cases as I think it will rock in 15 years

Thanks Craig, that was the sort of price range I was expecting. Didn't end up getting much time on my visit to chase bottles, but got one of their '09 Estates. Hopefully this will give me some idea of house style before chasing the top wines. Grabbed a '16 Kumeu Hunting Hill Chardonnay too, should be a nice night of NZ drinking.Craig(NZ) wrote:Yeah that's a crap price. Yes Grosset PH. I normally prefer their Springvale but the 2017 PH has amazing depth already at this age. I would happily put away another case or two but ski season is almost upon us and i have ski lessons to pay for for the family.FredericoWines wrote:Just to be certain. Re: June 2018 Purchases
A whole bunch of Wendouree!
22 bottles leaning towards the Cab Savs and Cab Mals. (assuming i get em all )
Last years Ade Wendouree offline demonstrated the variations in these wines across a 20-25 year period.
Most, if not all of the wines had something to offer for me. Particularly the Cabs.
I understand some folk have switched/jumped off the Wendouree band wagon but for me there's still enough substance
and future in the label to continue investing in it.
If anything the Ade Wendouree offline only scratched the surface and I can see another one in the future.
I think I just dobbed myself in....

The annual 2016 Burgundy lottery sorted itself out last week. I managed to get these for the same price as 7 and a bit full cases of Wendouree Shiraz. Probably the last year I will buy, but I probably said the same last year.

Prices for Rousseau continue to rise. The 14 was €325, while the 16 is €450. I wish you luck with the Chambertin - none for me nor my good buddy, who normally ends up with a half case.michel wrote:Every year is my last yearmychurch wrote:The annual 2016 Burgundy lottery sorted itself out last week. Not a bad effort Mychurch, I'd take those Burgs over that much Wendouree.mychurch wrote:Prices for Rousseau continue to rise. The 14 was €325, while the 16 is €450. I too said that 2014 was it for Burgundy but I caved in and got some 15’s.
I had my 2015 Rousseau allocations only a couple of months ago so the 16’s a long way away here. I passed on one allocation and hummed and hawed on the other and accepted it.
The only 2015’s I got so far are from Rousseau, Dujac, De Vogue and pre ordered some Chevillon.
2015 will definitely be the last vintage I buy and not a lot of it.
Burgundy prices down here have gone stupid and so have I for buying.
Cheers Con.
Re: June 2018 Purchases
Can't see the analogy...Wendouree compared with Burgundy...unless he purchased 90 bottles of Wendouree Shiraz...must have a very special order form with 3 Tony Brady signatures.
