I know some people don't come away impressed with this wine - that is why patience is imperative. I think it will drink well from 2020 - 2035+. By way of comparison, the 82 and 85 are drinking nicely now....

Enjoy..... down the road !

I've had the chance to taste this from 5 different bottles (4 of them on the same day; at a wedding, where it was used for the toast)

There was definitely bottle variation; from the meh to the incredible. But, in each case I felt that this was a wine that needs lots of time.

It will be interesting how the bottle variation pans out; will it converge or diverge? Either way, I thought it was a good enough a wine to take the punt.

I agree - definitely bottle variation. I've had it 7 times in 3 different countries. 5 times superb, one was ok, the other ordinary.

Great wine. I bought 2 doz, and half way through them.

Yes Brucer it is a very hard wine to keep your hands off.

Have you tried the Pagan? Yet to try it myself.

09 Coleraine at NZ$55 would be bargain of the year from where I sit.

Meanwhile, back in Melbourne:

3 x 2008 Marius Symphony
3 x 2008 Marius Simpatico
6 x 2009 Plantagenet Mt Barker shiraz

The lack of warm weather here is not encouraging the riesling buying that would usually be in full flow!

And something listed as 1990 Cloudy Bay Cabernet Merlot :?:

Yes Ross, I absolutely love the Pagan.

I have gone through 3 doz 05.
Have 06, 08, 05 and 09 still in the cellar.
I buy it every year without fail, and Wizard when Mark makes it.

Bruce:

Can you tell me about the characteristics of the Pagan compared to the Wizard. Is it similar but a little more refined....more elegant....or just bigger?
Also have you tried the 03 and 04?
What has been your favourite vintage to date?.....possibly the 05 considering consumption!!

Sorry about the numerous questions!!

The Pagan is full on Amarone style, which I really like. The Wizard is repasso, so it does not have as much full on raison flavour spectrum , more a balance or somewhere in between a normal red and amarone. The Wizard is the elegant one, and the Pagan is the brute. Both are quite sweet. But they dont taste of overripe dead fruit, even though the grapes have dried. Maybe it makes a difference drying them off the vine, as to getting too ripe on the vine.
I do like the 05 Pagan. The 06 is a bit lighter, the 08 is good, and I have not tried the 09. They are all very similar, and I just love the flavour profile, and dont really think too hard about them when drinking.
I do know that they are hard to stop drinking after I start. I think they will keep, but why bother. They are probably too sweet for food. To me, the Pagan is a special wine, that I look forward to drinking.
Mitolo have an amarone style cabernet, Serpico. Its good, but very expensive.

Thanks so much Bruce for all that info....very interesting. I will source some as the big rich sweet fleshy style certainly appeals to my palette.

thanks again

A couple of Tahbilk Every Day Drinking range, 6 each of Shiraz 2004 and Riesling 2011. I've not had a Tahbilk Riesling for several years or so and this one was awarded a gold in Hobart and a siver at Perth so could be good value for $7.45. It's not expected to be a keeper and I generally prefer younger whites anyway. The 2003 EDD Shiraz was enjoyed by others as well as by me so think the 2004 worth trying at $9.95.
