Visited a CD today they had a 2000 "premium" shiraz cleanskin for sale at $18 per bottle or $200 a case.
The winery has the following price points $250, $50, $19 on their shiraz.
Person at CD reckons the 'premium" cleanskin is the $50 wine but apparently he cant confirm.
My experiance is that this wine has the name of the wine on the cork, the cleanskin only has winery.....but my experiance only starts in 2004.
I'm a fan of the label and especially the $50 bottle and would jump at $200 cases.
What have people found with things such as this........good deals or scuttlebuck by the winery/CD staff?

Can you buy one and taste it? If it's 2000 it's probably one of their premium bottles....I can only guess they have put some away to be released as a museum type release and have more than they want.
It sounds as if you've tasted it already (if you've seen the cork). You've been to the CD already. Was it worth 18/bottle to you? If it doesn't taste right it doesn't matter which shiraz it was right?

Not available to taste but I bought 1 bottle to give it a go, as ive got a cold not confidant i'll know the answer.
The guy reckons I need to go back within next couple of days to get the low price.

Well, if it's Jim Barry (based on the information given), it would match up with the information given. 2000 I don't know if they made their cheaper shiraz (plus why would you cellar and hold back a cheaper release?). They have a museum 1999 release so that would make sense. So McRae Wood 2000 Shiraz would make sense...
Current Vintage cleanskins can be just about anything..not even a normally released wine....but I've generally found that older ones tend to be a museum release of some sort....

They didn't make a low end Shiraz in 2000 from what I can gather..and if they did why would they cellar it for a later release? They only seem to do that for their McRae and I've seen several other places sell off some of their museum stock as cleanskins when they realize they have a bit more than they want..

Yea.
A cleanskin 2000 Shiraz from premium grapes.
I did a google search for wine tasting notes, got enough info and bought.
I'm not buying to put away. I'm buying it to give the wine in the fridges some more time.
What's the worst than can happen?
It turns out to be stock from a vineyard he has just purchased or it is his.
Can't imagine it is his Lodge hill as my last bottle of 04 was a little too soft when i drank it a couple weeks ago.

Exactly...The worst case is you have an aged Shiraz from 2000 for 17/bottle..
The didn't make a Lodge in 2000 from what I can see..but even if they did, why the heck would you cellar it for a museum release?
Also, the McRae 1999 Museum is what they have now..which logically means the 2000 will be available soon but the probably have too many....
I mean, I'll honestly say, they only charge a $10 premium for the 1999 so it's possible those older vintages aren't as good...but how bad can a relatively premium level wine be with 10+ years of age on it be when they sell an even older one as a museum? Maybe the 2000 is on it's way out? Could be..is it dead, doubt it..

Had my bottle and yes very possible to be mcrae wood.
The bottle to me was on the downward slope, could see some good fruit behind it but it in the drink now stage.
Got some of the 99 last year at a good price, of the 6 bottles 2 were great 1 ok 1 drinkable the others down the sink which adds to my concern on this.
Have a mixed 6 pack from 94 to 98 which were gifts a couple of years ago, provenance unknown so will now shift these into drink ASAP.

so far from the case I got, one bottle excellent (despite a knackered cork), one bottle badly corked, and one bottle moderately oxidised (although not undrinkable within my pretty lax standards of drinkability).
The excellent bottle showed very strong blackcurrant and red current nose with some bitumen and leather, very little tannin remaining, but enough acid to keep it all together. In truth it tasted more like a cab-shiraz blend than a straight shiraz to me, but I don't have much experience with Clare shiraz.

Just wanted to say thanks for the heads up.
I've done most of the carton now and i found them to be lovely.
A couple of cork issues and a yucky bottle aside, this has a lovely lingering flavour starting with cherries and continuing with soft red fruits and vanillas.
Wish I had have grabbed more. For the price it is going down a treat.
