TN: 1997 Orlando Jacaranda Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon

Post by n4sir »

1997 Orlando Jacaranda Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra (cork): Medium to dark crimson. Lovely nose of blackcurrant, black liquorice, shoe polish and tar, fine cedar/vanillin oak and cigar box; the palate’s medium-weight, significantly lighter for a Jacaranda Ridge but in line with the vintage, the jubey fruit leading to a chalky, grippy, minty finish with fine tannins. The whole package has come together nicely, but it’s at its peak and shouldn’t be held any longer.

Cheers,
Ian

Ian

Thoroughly enjoyed reading your reviews on the Coonawarra Shiraz/blends of the 90's....[on the other forum.] It has inspired me to seek out the Wynns '91 Centenary.
The only Michael of the 90's i have tried was a '93 and it was well past its best unfortunately.

Thanks Ross. You'll find there's an identical thread here (not too far down) - I post these things on both forums simultaneously.

Cheers,
Ian

Given the tasting notes, i thought i might crack mine next Sunday.

I have put in the order for a roast of beef with the chef. (Me mum)
Read her the tasting notes t o give her an idea on what to cook and we should be good to go.

I am wondering though.
Did you decant the wine and if so how long did you let it sit?

Cheers.

I didn't decant this at all, although with older wines I always tend to play it on the cautious side.

The bottle was in excellent condition, the fill level and cork were just about perfect, and the wine was singing from the outset so I didn't force things. There's a little bit of sediment, but not much considering it's a 14 year old Coonawarra flagship wine.

If you do decant, I'd recommend you do it as late as possible and avoid double decanting (which exposes the wine to a double flush of air in the process) - while there was no sign of the wine falling over, because it's a lighter vintage I'd still tread carefully.

That said, with wines of this age under cork there's almost always some variation - as many have said, there aren't so many great old wines, just great old bottles.

Cheers,
Ian

Fantastic, thank you.

I bought the wine about four years ago from Jacobs Creek cellar door and aside from travelling to my house it went straight into a wine fridge.
Here's hoping it's a great bottle.

(And we can plan a good meal accordingly)...
