Tainted wine from storage in new fridge cabinet

Post by Alwin »

I've gone through the sequence of storing wine in boxes at home for a few years, then in a commercial wine storage unit for a further 3 years and finally in my own fridge for 2 months. The first bottle of semillon (2006) that I tasted was terrible -both nose and palate. After studying the nose "smell" It reminded me of the odour coming from the interior of the fridge, I noticed this at the time of instalation but thought it would go away (newness smell) but it hasn't. I now believe that it has tainted all of the wines. I now feel frustrated that whilst trying to do the best thing for me and the wine I've stuffed up big time. Is this a recognised failing in some brands of wine fridges? I can't believe that the supplier is unaware of this problem. But I intend to rectify this if that is so.

Hi Alwin
Try a second bottle. One tainted bottle does not make a pattern.
Some more info would be good too. What sort of closure (cork, screw cap etc) was used for the wine? What was the closure like when you opened the bottle (ie dinted screw cap/ poor quality cork)? Did someone else confirm the taste for you (sometimes we experience things that are not always there)?
never underestimate the predictability of stupidity

There's a recent thread about smell removal which might be perfect for you if you can find it...

Thank you -rens- for your response. Answers = closure? -- cork, pristine, good quality : Drinking alone? no one other -agreed that nose was unusual for a 'wine'. Second bottle? yes and very similar experience, but it was a Semillon different vintage. Other bottle? not the same but it was a Rheisling. It may well be that i am not as familiar with Semillons as I thought and that to my surprise this is the charactr of this variety of wine ---amazing! I made a connect between two odours that appeared related.
The supplier of this particular wine fridge assures me that whilst there is an odour associated with this particular fridge and the usual silicon that they use to seal wine fridges it has not been a problem.
Phew!

Vintec models had this problem as well as a few others issues, but looks like theyve gone down the tubes their buildings for sale.
