TN: 25th Wedding Anniversary Wines

Today is our 25th Wedding Anniversary and we're going out with the immediate family and a few close friends for dinner at the, newly discovered, nearby restaurant called Pistachio. I've selected the following wines for the evening and will report back here with notes later once festivities have concluded.

Moet and Chandon Dom Perignon 1995 - still quite infantile in colour and development and blessed with decidedly elegant and subtle aromas and flavour underpinned by a distinguished raw power and intensity - quite wonderful and worth every penny. 93

Trimbach Cuvee Frederic Emile Riesling 1996 (Magnum) - stuffed by the Portuguese cork disease. 55 .... only because the greatness of what the winemaker had intended on the palate was still trying to fight the mould and mustiness of the everpresent TCA.

Lindemans Coonawarra Sesquicentenary Cabernet Sauvignon 1990 (Magnum) - brilliant in the way this beautiful, low alcohol red unfolded and complexed with extended air time. Magnificent fruit and regional mintiness with a bevy of subtle and so painless savoury French oak providing exemplary support. 93

Coutet Cuvee Madame 1986 - couldn't find the bastard of a thing in the box on my spreadsheet! Found a 1983 Doisy-Vedrines instead that was simply brilliant. So adolescent with amazing youthful aromatics and so smooth and well-delineated on an extremely long and flavoursome palate. Terrific acid cut and simply superb length. 93

Seppelt Rutherglen Vintage Port 1972 - not opened.

Happy Anniversary, David. You were married 8 days before me!
I am planning a quiet night with the other half for our 25th - we will be in Noosa and only one out of three sons will be there.
I am looking at 1986- Bin 28 or Bin 707. I am leaning toward the former because I think the latter will hang on a touch longer, until next year.

Congratulations David. Certainly something to be celebrated. Our 25th anniversary is this year too. Not wedding anniversary as we're still waiting on Julia to change the laws on that one but our anniversary never the less.

We had the Bin 28- my last bottle of the 1986. It was decanted by the restaurant and was in great shape. I couldn't see the colour because of the lack of light in the restaurant. The nose was developed but quite clean. On the palate it was largely secondary with chocolatey, earthy and leathery characters. The balance was superb. It is probably my WOTY so far. It only lacked a touch of intensity and length to be in the highest echelon for me. It may have been better around 2-3yrs ago, but is in no quick decline.
It was our only bottle on the night as it was just the two of us. We had the prime table at Season restaurant on Hastings street at Noosa, right next to the boardwalk. A memorable night for us.

We celebrate 21 years in Adelaide in a few days time. Almost as good as a wedding anniversary after escaping from Sydney in 1990. The vintage was not too bad either. Long slow ripening period - warm days and cool fresh nights. Within a few weeks we were drinking the 1986 Bin 389 at $9 thinking we had found nervana.
