I have Christmas at the olds sorted, just have to decide what to open on boxing day.
I don't have an extensive cellar, i don't really have much at all, so my jewels are very young. So one will be opened on Boxing day this year.
I know it is not ideal to be opening any of these wines so young, but i would like forumites opinions on what one you would open given the choice/chance.
The choices are
2006 Astralis 2005 Roennfeldt Road 2006 Run Rig Magnum
Out of those three I'd imagine the magnum would be the most approachable. That said, they're all cellaring wines, so why don't you buy yourself a mixed six-pack before Christmas to tide you over. It is summer after all. What about a nice cooling white wine or two ?
Just wondering if you guys would have said the same thing about the 98 grange on release? I had one of these not long after release and it's still the best wine i have ever had the pleasure of draining or is Grange a different kettle of fish to the wines i have mentioned?
To be honest the youngest Grange I've drank that I thought was in it's drinking window would have been an 83. I've had about 10 vintages past that (87, 88, 91, 94, 95, 96, 97, 02, 04) and none of them looked anywhere near drinking. I'm not saying they weren't great but that they could be a lot better in years to come. Prior to the 83 I've had the 66, 67, 76, 77, 78 all were sublime and still drinking superbly. It really is a 40-50 year wine in a lot of cases.
Had a 2004 Runrig last year - after an hour in the decanter it opened up brilliantly - overshadowed older 707's, RWT's, St Henri's etc. I wouldn't be afraid of knocking it off - if ur not going to open ur best wines at Xmas when are you going to.....
If you can remember what a wine is like the next day you didn't drink enough of it Peynaud
I'd drink something cheap or stick to beer and watch the cricket. These wines aren't going to drink well at such a young age.
I agree. A nice chilled off dry riesling, a beer or dare I say it a top Sauvignon Blanc. I honestly can't believe how you Australians can face those big full bodied red wines in the heat of your summer

Geez, I don't make a point of agreeing with you terribly often Craig, but I'm with you on this . After a gut full of protein and fat the day before, I'd be steering clear of the big Barossa ballbusters and looking for something with a bit more delicacy and lightness. A good Tassie chard would be my pick, a Riesling would be perfect and if you HAVE to drink something from SA that's kinda red I'd draw the line at a Teusner Salsa.
Save the ballbusters for midyear Xmas in about 10 years time..
