Got a story for ya's.
I went into a bottle shop who i will not name and asked for prices on four bottles.

This is how it went.

The shop was busy, it was a Friday night.

"How much for these four bottles please" I asked.

"I have to ring them up to check" He replied.

"No sweat"

"Ok" he said "$280, $120, $99 and thast looks like it might be the margret river red, so $24.99"

"How many of those Margret river reds do you have" I enquired cautiously.

"Dunno, let's go have a look".

Down the back of the shop we went to find seven bottles. "I'll take the lot thanks mate". I said as calmly as i could.

And that is how i picked up seven bottles of Cullens 'Diana Madeline' for under $175

I went back five days later and asked the bottleshop manager what he was doing with the wines out the back and he said he wanted to get rid of them.
I negotiated on the spot and walked out wth 3 2005 Penfold cellar reserve cabernets and 3 penfolds cellar reserve cab/shiraz for $100ea.

Today i went back after negotiating with the new bottle shop manager and walked out with 7 (2001) Woodlands Cab, 4 (2004) Woodlands Cab, 5 (2005) Moss Wood Cab and 3 (05) Shingleback D Block Cab for a nice price too.

Just need some more space on the credit card so i can go back and finish the shopping...

Some notable overseas critics - with good palates if you read the wines they like - gave the 2005 Cab Shiraz an absolute rave, Neil Beckett (editor of World of Fine Wines magazine) in the RoP tastings bracketed it along the Block 42 2004 as "superlative" with Josh Green, Editor of Wines & Spirits not far behind. Julia Sevenich, a leading Swiss wine writer also rated it above the 1996 and 2004 Granges with a ranking (for her) up with First Growths.

tried both the can and cab shiraz 05's. I much prefered the cab. And I agree vs first growths, that is what it reminded me of

I know it sounds like a dumb statement, but sometimes the stuff in the cellar takes too long to be ready to drink. Not that i would have it any other way, but i've only been collecting for four years and nothing is at its peak yet.

They also had some Bethany GR9 (04) i got for $50ea still wrapped up in its paper.

I just think that if they are selling them to the Kiwi's that cheap (even allowing for the exchange rate & different tax levels), why can't they sell it to their bread and butter market (Australia) at the same price. I did taste the 2005 cellar reserve wines at the cellar door late last year and I agree, they are exceptional. But they wanted $200 a bottle. To my way of thinking that is a little overpriced. Even more so when you find out they are $89NZ in Kiwi land.

It just seems that Penfolds are taking the piss out of us honest Aussies!
