Wynns Green Label Cab?
Wynns Green Label Cab?
Saw this one today. 2009 Vintage for $16 in Ist Ch. Anyone tried or know much about it. Nothing on Wynns website. Targetting a price point just below where Black label has been recently?

Hi Calm,
Wynns Green Label Cab will be/is line priced with the CSM and Shiraz. Below is the tasting note that was sent out to the trade from TWE. I'll post my own up later this week.
FYI: The current Wynns Cab will now be known as "Wynns Black Label Cabernet"
Tasting note
Colour:
Medium ruby red with a bright hue.
Nose:
Cassis and distinctive dark red
cherries are lifted with a hint of
regional and varietal Coonawarra
mint.
Palate:
Good depth of Cabernet fruit melds
with subtle creamy oak and long
chalky tannins. Approachable in its
youth and will reward with short to
medium cellaring.
Re: Wynns Green Label Cab?
Thanks for that. Will keep an eye out for the punters view on this wine which I would think should be good given heritage and the success of it's stable mates.

Re: Wynns Green Label Cab?
You would think that the BL would be the better choice seeing as it has been $19 at the chains last week...
Re: Wynns Green Label Cab?
I was thinking the same thing, but they all seem to be back to $24 - $26 now. Put 8 away. Will have to try this one just for interest sake. Problem is that whilst it is released at $16, you know that sooner or later a $12 price will eventuate.

Perhaps less than $12, I've had a few bottles of white label shiraz 08 for less than $10, the Red Stripe sometimes gets down to about $10-$11 but I can't remember the last time I bought any.

You may be right, Daz. Although, being straight cabernet sauvignon, I wonder. It seems like the shiraz (unless it's name is Michael) and the CSM (not bad for a tenner) swallows up the extra shiraz and merlot that distracts from their core business - producing great cabernet.
I could be cynical, and suggest that this is an attempt to reposition Black Label around the $25-30 mark, with the individual vineyard wines above that, and the JR / Michael as the Holy Grail (and back up to their $75 price points of yesteryear). I hope not......
Cheers
Allan
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.
Re: Wynns Green Label Cab?
$12.90 at a certain chain already!

I was going to mention that too (sgl btl is $13.58). Allan's probably right about the repositioning of the Black Label. I suspect the sub$20 price wil not be seen again. Here's the chain's TN:
"With a whopping palate of ripe juicy dark fruits and cassi this wine displays a striking resemblance to its Black Label big brother. A must-buy for lovers of Wynns,"

They have a simple strategy, fill the gap. The CSM and Shiraz are ranked well. not having a cab in the range is a loss. I doubt the Black Label Cab will move anywhere in price anytime in the near future. Doing that in this market would be nuts.
Re: Wynns Green Label Cab?
OK, that's a solid observation. Fosters needs to fortify the value of it's brands/labels to maximise the sale price of it's wine assets. This wine is likely to get some attention at it's price point but it will be offered cheaper whilst the BL will probably settle around $25-$30.

I hope you are right. I haven't gotten around to picking up my BL 2008s yet. Hoping to get them around $20@. Thought I might 'go long' on the 2008 and get 12.
Cheers

Me either. I hope they come back on sale for around $20 as well. I normally get 3 or 4 of each decent vintage and just throw them at the back of the cellar and forget about them. I have several vintages and one day in the future they will make a good vertical.
It will be interesting to see with the release of the Green Label, whether or not BL will discounted in the future. I think they will really lose a lot of sales if they keep it at $30. They'll lose me as I think that there is better buying at $30.
If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?
Re: Wynns Green Label Cab?
Dan Murphy was selling the BL at $19.9 two weeks ago, I picked 2 bottles
Re: Wynns Green Label Cab?
Has anyone tried the Green Label yet? This is my alcohol free month and also I've promised my better half that I won't buy any more wine until we go to Bali in February and its killing me.....
My experience is that the first of any new range is often very good just to pick up market share. (If it is I'll get a mate to buy a dozen and I'll swap some!).
Cheers

I had a quick taste earlier in the week at an outlet. Didn't do much for me, but having said that, tasting a wine from a very small plastic thimble which was obviously too warm will never do a wine justice. When I look at wines of a variety I always compare the alternatives in the price point, I continue to be impressed every time I have tasted the 2008 Barwang Cab in this sector.

What's the difference between Wynns Green/Black Label Cabernet Sauvignons?

Couldn't agree more about the small plastic thimble bit. I suppose the reason why wineries don't charge a nominal fee (say $10 that may/may not be used to offset the price of a purchase) for a glass and decent pours is the fear of losing walk in trade. It's up to wineries to make their own commercial decisions but I'd at least like the option of an up front charge that would allow me to make up my mind on reasonable information. It would also remove the implicit (for some) expectation that having been given a free taste, one is honour bound to then buy.

And $15/btl? Come in spinner!
Re: Wynns Green Label Cab?
One thing to note, it will fill the gap in their product range. When these assortments go on promotion, those that want a straight cab were not serviced. From a fosters(TWE)business perspective, They will pay the same rate to promote the assortment but move more volume due to the extra SKU. Not everyone wants to spend $25 on a bottle of wynns black label on promo, even if its a heavy discount on the normal RRP, customers just can't justify these prices. attracting the $15-20(or $12-15 at big box) price point consumer is key.

No, the difference is about $6-$7 per bottle on case price.
Seriously though, Wynns have huge Cabernet resources, especially as the results of their vineyard rejuvenation kick in. As NSJN2 says, this fills in at the same level as the White Label Shiraz and red-stripe CSM. They also have the new single vineyard and special bottlings at the level above Black Label and below Michael/John Riddoch. Possibly in the past some of the excess went off to other areas of Fosters /TWE, looks like they are ramping up their own offerings in preference now, covering more bases. That would also be good preparation to sell off the brand at a premium if TWE was bought and renovated then broken up (at least partially) for sale as separate businesses.
Cheers

Thanks Brian. That makes sense, and is putting the picture together more than I did in a previous post. I strongly suspect you're right.
On that logic, it's likely that green label will dip even lower, as white label shiraz and CSM have done. They are both regularly available <$10.
