July 2010-What have you been buying

The month is only 2 days old and I've just picked up a case of quaffers (not worth mentioning).
I tell a little lie, 8 quaffers and 4x 2006 Cirillo 1850 Old Vine Grenache. Never tried it but the 150 year old vines thing caught my eye and I'm Loving Grenache at the moment. So I thought I gotta have me some of that!

Speaking of grenache, I opened a 2001 La Testa grenache (15%) last nite - big chewy - became lovely after about 2 hours - could only drink half the bottle with my wife which is unusual - be interesting to see how it shapes up tonite.

Two major orders this month - a dozen of the 2009 Felton Rd assorted pinots (about $720 - $730 delivered to the door i.e., 4 Bannockburn, 4 Cornish Point and 4 Block 3's)
and the Wendouree order which I can never predict (and the bill will come much later thank heavens) - 2 of Shiraz malbec, 2 cab malbec, 2 cabernet, 4 shiraz, 2 shiraz mataro

wish I could order more but the bank keeps insisting that I make mortgage payments!

1 x "Yalumba Port" quoting Bayer as the provider. Probably a chrissy gift for clients and a real lottery although Yalumba don't/didn't make bad fortifieds. When Blass bought the Galway Pipe brand they put cheap stuff in it and ruined the label. Why do the big guys keep doing this?

and Chuck, could not agree more about the change of seasons, and the change of drinking choices. The long summer of riesling is a distant memory, and thanks to the Seppelts rolling deals on VP stock, winter is as toasty as can be, and shiraz tastes like nectar as well. Mmmmmmmm

Reinhold Haart Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Spätlese 2004: Just had a try at the 2004. After we had a magnificent magnum of the 2003 a month ago, we had high hopes also for this bottle. And we were not disappointed. Perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, good finish, a perfect riesling.

Weingut Aufricht Blaufraenkisch (Pinot Noir) Isabel 3-Lilien 2007: A wine most of you might not know. It is from a winery at the Lake of Constance in Germany. A very fine Pinot, with silky tannins, great fruit and very nice finish. Certainly up to the best wine from Burgundy. Unfortunately, very difficult to get some bottles, even in Germany.

I also had some friends invited to drink some wines which we tasted blind. I opened my last bottle of the Acacia Reserve Pinot Noir St. Clair Vineyard 1986 which was my surprise wine last year. Also this bottle was a perfect Pinot, absolutely a fantastic wine. Unfortunately, the 1986 is finished now, luckily I still got a good dozen of the 1996 (not yet tried).

Although the Acacia was perfect, there was even a step higher - we tried again the Henschke Keyneton Estate Shiraz / Cabernet / Malbec 1985 which I mentioned in my last post in June: Again a big W O W!!!!! My friends also said that this one is one of the greatest wine they have had so far. Truly an amazing wine, just heaven on earth. One of my friends told me that he did not want to brush his teeth that evening because of the flavors he still had in his mouth that night. Luckily, still two bottles left.

I will happily pass over buying the insanely priced 2009 Bordeaux and buy more of these extraordinary New World wines. Fortunately, they are currently not really in favour of the wine world, so I can get them at "insane" prices (e.g. Cyrill Henschke for AUD 25.-- or Cullen Merlot for AUD 20.--!!!!!)

Monghead, at these prices I could not resist to buy almost all bottles of the Australian wines they offered. I rather do not buy the 2009 Bordeaux. I hope they are in a similar condition as the Keyneton 85, I would be a very happy man.

Hey redwine, isn't Blaufrankish a seperate varietal to Pinot Noir? I thought the german for Pinot Noir was Spatburgander. Sounds like a great wine in any event.

For me, I finally got into a bottle of the Yalumba 2008 Cigar at a work lunch, no notes, but I felt an immediate imperative to collect 6 straight after work. I haven't enjoyed a Coonaarra wine this much in years and years. Then again, I haven't approached a lot either

Hey redwine, isn't Blaufrankish a seperate varietal to Pinot Noir? I thought the german for Pinot Noir was Spatburgander. Sounds like a great wine in any event.

Andrew, you are absolutely right, my mistake. It was a Spaetburgunder and not a Blaufraenkisch. We also had a Blaufraenkisch "Moric" from Roland Velich (Burgenland) that evening. A good wine, but nothing to get excited about. Probably, we should try once the Neckenmarkter Blaufränkisch which got 95 from Parker.

I'm pretty good at skipping the tidal wave of "who cares" wines that are offered at "bargain" prices on an almost daily basis, but this one i couldnt let pass. One of the most morish chardonnay labels in the country and probably if you think about it you could argue still in NZ's top 10 chardonnays even given hte fact it doesnt have the profile it once did.
