TN: 2001 Jim Barry Waterval Riesling

Post by n4sir »

2001 Jim Barry Watervale Riesling (Stelvin) Bright straw-yellow colour. Very tight structured lemon/mineral characters on the nose, with a touch of kerosene on opening. The palate has intense lemon marmalade and mineral water, with a splash of lime juice and hints of sweet licorice. It spent the next evening wholly in the refrigerator. The third night it developed creamy, custard apple characters, with a hint of vanilla on the palate. On the fourth night that vanilla had switched to the nose, with an amazingly fresh burst of orange blossom. The palate has become very spicy and rich, featuring orange marmalade, great persistence and fullness. I always thought this was good when it was released, but the class and complexity it has developed in the following two and a half years is amazing. Astonishing for the $12.00 price tag.

Cheers,
Ian

Agree with your sendiments. Interestingly, I found the 2001 much better than the 2002.

Thanks,
Adair
