Winelist price shock - a good one!

Post by GraemeG »

At Nick's Seafood Restaurant in Darling Harbour, Sydney earlier this week. It's not a long wine list by any means, quite modest in fact, but among the 06 & 07 reds it had 98 Bin 389 for.... $85!
I checked with the waiter - is this the right vintage? Yes, it is...
So I ordered it. Yes, it was correct.
Three bottles consumed, all very good.
Moreover, they had the 98 Bin 407 for $70...

motto: read wine lists carefully.
cheers,
Graeme

A few weekends ago at The Terrace at the Newport Hotel discovered 02 Vat 1 for $80 a bottle. Most other things on the list were at least 2.5 the retail price so on a wonderful sunny day over looking Pittwater having some seafood what else are you suppose to do?

The bride hates how I spend more time on the wine list than the menu, however it can pay off.

Cheers

Last year I was lucky enough to find a Guigal Condrieu on a restaurant wine list for $60. Usually $80+ at retail so I was very happy.

Cheers

Not really a match for these but when I was in South Beach, Miami I went to a random Italian restaurant and they had current vintage St Henri for $US 65

At the Nick's restaurant on King Street Warf in late 2008 I had 2005 Tyrrell's Vat 47 for $49. It was sensational with the grilled seafood platter for two.

It was the standout price on the wine list. About the same price as CD.

I love cooking with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food.

I don't know about that, given the retail minimum here is $A70ish I know what I would be ordering!

One of our local pubs had the 04 Dead Arm Shiraz for $54. Some bastard bought the last bottle a week before I tried to.

The most interesting one I had was Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay at $65 (they had a half case) at a very good restaurant in Kalgoorlie WA
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

Haha very nice. A local Dan Murphy's are trying to flog this for $140 a bottle retail at the moment. Can't see that flying out the door.

I wish I could afford to consider even eating at these places. One list is from cape kidnappers, a restaurant at an exclusive Hawkes Bay resort which has accomodation up to $12,000 a night from memory for a 4 bedroom 'house'. Just a tad outside my price bracket!

On topic the best deals i can remember taking advantage of is Villa Maria Reserve Noble Riesling for $50 at Dine by Peter Gordon, and Unison Selection for about $35 at Iguacu

Makes the 08 Penfolds Grange at the Innamincka Hotel positively cheap at $840!!! That makes for a change..

Not sure if this is on the money (don't usually buy older wine), but picked up a 1998 bottle of 389 at a local bottle shop for $89....

Not sure if they'd tried to sell it a few years prior at that price, then didn't change the label?
