Schloss Lieser German riesling dinner 3 March Sydney

Post by rooman »

Anyone going to the Schloss Lieser German riesling dinner at Galileo, Observatory Hotel, Kent St, Sydney on 3 March :?: I think it will an excellent evening. If anyone is going or coming down from Brisbane (cos I know there are at least a couple of fans up there) it would be great to catch up and meet some of the other forumites 8)

There are about 15 booked for Sydney so far and a few more tentatives, and about 10 in for Melbourne (March 1). I'll invite a couple of journos to each one and hope they can promote the cause.
NB: I import wine from 100 boutique producers in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, NZ and SA. You may think my opinions are biased ;-) As opinions are :-)

PM me you name and phone number. I will put a link on the Eurocentric website when the details are finalised and then people can pay online, or pay to the restaurant.

I talked with Galileo yesterday and they are going to work out a menu and try to keep costs as low as possible. Should be finalised in a week. Will be publicised in the Telegraph, SMH Good Living etc, so hopefully we get 50-60 people.

I wonder how much the price influences people's decision here ... I see a dinner with some other winemakers is going for $275! This one more likely to be between $90 and $150.

The tasting sounds great and the winemaker for Schloss Lieser is apparently a rockstar back home. German wines have been the big discovery for me over the last couple of years and I really wish I had started collecting much earlier. Whilst they are superb drinking early on, the wines go through a real metamorphosis after 7 years or so. Sadly David Lole seems to be one of the few people I know of that has built up a decent cellar of aged German wines based on his annual best wines of the year.

If you decide to go, let me know, it would be great to catch up.

I think it will be an interesting tasting given the actual winemaker will be there. I am really looking forward to hearing what he says about his wines and especially what they can do in terms of aging and cellaring. As I said above I am still very new to these wines and it is a great opportunity to hear about them from someone who really knows his stuff.

It's now looking like 17 wines, including a BA and two older vintages, a price around $150, and a chap by the name of James Halliday as the guest of honour in Melbourne. Hoping to have Andrew Caillard and/or Huon Hooke in Sydney.

Have tried two Melbourne restaurants for zero response so far, so will call Ocha tomorrow.... turns out they are closed until February 2.

Count me in for Melbourne please.

May I recommend Esposito in Carlton? They are not BYO as a rule, but have a lovely upstairs area, and as a largely seafood resto, would have a keen interest in riesling - I would reckon!

True, of course it's BYO, excuse my brain-fade.

Another idea, Moreton's Brasserie, also in Carlton, prepared some quite sensational food for the Blue Poles event last year.

Awesome menu Neville. One of the reasons I am really interested in the tasting is I am keen to see how the various wines match up against the dishes, particularly as you move into the spatlese and auslese territory. It is matching the German wines against different types of food that is most interest to me.

I was wondering who made the final decision to go. I am really looking forward to hearing the winemaker and trying his wines. I particularly want to see how he pairs up the wines with the food. I am also keen to put some names to faces.

It looks like 21-25 in Melbourne and 43-50 in Sydney.

Couple of Melbourne people had to go pick grapes today instead of coming out for a drink ... all the more for the rest of us.

Roman Niewodniczanski from Van Volxem, Christoph Schaefer from Willi Schaefer, and Tim Frohlich from Schafer-Frohlich all want to come out, probably next year, so it will be interesting to see if we can get numbers in Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide. Should make a competition -- most pre-booking wins the visit :D

Lucky I checked here. If anyone is dropping out at this late stage, with food bought, table settings made, wines arranged, etc, could they email or call please?

There were 45 booked at one stage. Seem to have lost about 10 today, but the hotel has been taking direct bookings too.

Melbourne was awesome at the Undertaker. Wines looked great, food was fantastic, matching was very clever. Only downside was a couple of slight delays and Thomas and I talking too much :-) We'll be better for the run.
