December - What have you been buying?

Post by Craig(NZ) »

Ok folks, silly season. What are we stocking up with this time of year??

Not much here, touring Martinborough this month so might grab the odd one there. Got me a bottle of 06 Puriri Hills Reserve to keep the vertical going. It's just starting to hit its straps now but patience required.

Decided again to resist Champagne specials this year

Speaks volumes about the stupid tax on wine in this country that even with the obscene freight rates from NZ to Sydney*, you can land Felton Rd Block 5 here for A$62 (via the mail list) whereas it sells for A$120+ at retail.

*How is it that a case of wine sent from NZ to Sydney costs A$105, whereas a Margaret River winery will ship you a dozen wines for A$20?

Also, have traded a heap of credit card points for something useful - an 04 Grange!
cheers,
Graeme

Well, since an auction started, I'll bid too.

How about $ 100, free pickup and I'll throw in a case of yellow tail shiraz, vintage not known (does it matter ?)

Dunno about the varietal shiraz of whatever vintage, but don't just diss JC wines out of hand. Halliday rated the both shiraz cab 06 and cab merl 05 90/100. Haven't tried the latter but have drunk dozens of the former. And although some reckon Halliday's ratings are higher than realistic, Gary and Campbell from The Wine Front are often only a point or two within Halliday's ratings and that's plus or minus e.g. Halliday 94, Walsh 93 for Longhop Mt Lofty Ranges Shiraz 08.

$$$$s for wine doesn't automatically = drinkability + enjoyment, even after extended cellaring.

Cheers

Don't know exactly how it's made up, as I'm not the one on the mail list, but there's no WET involved, I'm pretty certain of that. It'd have GST at most. And trans-Tasman freight, that most expensive little bit of water in the world
Why should there be import taxes on anything coming from NZ to Austraklia (& vice versa). If the EU can manage barrier-free trade across 8 languages and most of Western Europe, you'd think two Commonwealth nations in the South Pacific could do it...

Yikes! Don't want to rain on the parade at all, but I can't imagine anyone in NZ that would be interested in these.
I guess you're aware that NZ Sav Blanc, to most palates, lacks the keeping qualities of Sancerre. Drink'em young
is my rule, and I never cellar kiwi SB. Hope they are good for you.

I concur. Tasted it on release and it was sensational (think I posted some notes here). Managed to get 3 for the cellar. Can't wait to see how it's going in about 2020.

Not a big purchaser of Champagne, but it is reaching fairly irresistible levels. In AUstralia, the following were irresistible for me this year;

1.) Lanson Black Label; $99 for three bottles. Bought a dozen. Seriously under-rated, generous, entry level champagne.
2.) Veuve Cliquot 2002; $84 a bottle, dozen buy. Never been a fan of the NV, but the 2002 vintage is an absolutely top-flight champagne.
