Heartland Vineyard in the Hunter valley

Post by Anonymous »

One of my great auction bargains a few years ago was a Hunter Valley Shiraz from Heartland Vineyard. Googling doesn't produce any recent references. Does anyone know if they are still around perhaps under a different name?

No sign of it on Halliday's site. Perhaps it wasn't economically viable and the vineyard sold to a bigger player. Another possibility is that illness may have provoked a sale. Either or any other way, there's likely to have been a sad demise of the label. Hopefully someone can advise what happened and if sold, who owns it now.

The Heartland brand is now used for a range of South Aust wines made by Ben Glaetzer.

Life's too short to drink white wine and red wine is better for you too! :-)

Yep, but I had a look for Heartland Vineyard, Hunter Valley. It's at least several years since I had any of the Heartland wines from Langhorne Creek/Limestone Coast.

Ahhhh. I googled some of the text from Halliday's 2006 Top100 entry:

"Heartland Vineyard Shiraz Viognier 2004
93 points $11
The property of cardiac surgeon Duncan and wife cardiac scrub nurse Libby Thomson, and nothing to do with Heartland Wines of South Australia. Very good colour, round and mouthfilling even at this (desirable) low alcohol; dark plum and black cherry fruit with a strong push from the unusually high 16% viognier component.
Drink Now-2008, with Marinated Venison, S, 12.4? alc, Hunter Valley, NSW
wwwstopheartlandvineyardstopcomstopau"

and that took me to another Halliday reference:

"Duncan and Libby Thomson, cardiac surgeon and cardiac scrub nurse...when a trademark dispute caused them to drop the Heartland Vineyard name and substitute Camp Road Estate."

Maybe that's why the wine went to auction. At $60/dozen it was a great buy.

Thanks for the suggestions

Well done!!

Though I have a perhaps irrational aversion to SV blends

I'm pretty sure I had straight Shiraz. I checked their website and see they have stocks of the 02 at $80/dozen which would be a bargain if it has lasted. I'm keen to hear from anyone who has tried it lately?

I ordered the 02 Shiraz which my previous user account posted about. It is a nice smooth weekday wine, great value at $80/ dozen. I ordered 4 more and a dozen of the Merlot, just in case. Worth a look if you are on a budget and looking for wine to drink now.

The name has been changed:

Probably to avoid confusion with the Sth Aust Heartland plus there's also a Heartland Vineyards in the USA too.
