I tried already some of them last weekend.

The Rol Valentin 1997 was even better than I expected for a 1997 Bordeaux, the E&E Black Pepper 1997 was superb, still youthful with a lot of fruit. But the highlight was the Calissano Barolo 1970. First, after about 15 minutes, it was still closed and tasted a bit metallic. But then it opened up wonderfully, soft and silky with a great sweetness in the long, long finish. We also had a Greenock Creek Alices Shiraz 2005. This one was a thick monster, great to drink but almost a bit too much at the moment. I am sure it will develop nicely over the next ten to twenty years.

A week before, we also had the Acacia Pinot Noir 1986. As I bought this one for only a few bucks and due to its age, I did not really expect anything from it. But what a surprise. This was a great wine, still going very strong, one of the best Pinot Noir I ever tasted.

As I said before, I very much enjoy such old wines these days. Unfortunately, my wife still prefers the younger stuff. But I am sure, over time I can also convince her......

A case of 2001 Trimbach Frederic Emile (I've got to keep my hands of it this time around!) and another six-pack of 2005 Penfolds Cellar Reserve Cabernet Shiraz (this is going to be awesome in a decade +). Oh yeah - a six pack of 96 Bin 707 at auction....

A couple of note, amongst a swag of miscellaneous bottles:

I've talked about Josef Chromy 'Pepik' Chardonnay before. I found that an unnamed retailer had back vintages scattered amongst the stock, so collected a mixed dozen of equal parts 2005, 2007, and 2008. The 2005 in particular is a good wine.

Secondly, most of a case of Stephen John Riesling 2007 (Watervale, Clare Valley). This one sings

I would have tried this - cant specifically remember it. Although 97 was a below avg Hawkes Bay vintage Sacred Hills first offerings were quite dense and ripe in comparison to other makers at the time. They could be ok actually though I wouldnt keep them any longer. The earth wont move though

Thanks Graig. I tried a bottle tonight and the wine is still going strong with a good fruit and nicely softening down after about two hours. It also develops a very tasty sweetness in a very long finish.

My Wendouree purchase has gone through -- one magnum of 91 and three bottles each of the shiraz malbec and shiraz mataro (if my memory serves me, and no reason why it should start now).

Also got some Zind Humbrecht 07s coming next week, which I ordered after visiting the domaine in April. The shipment was all presold to retailers and restaurants, so if you want some, get to whoever you know that stocks it! Happy to give tasting notes if anyone wants to know about any wine in particular as I think I tried about 30 on the day!

I used to have niggling concerns about that too, but my partner refuses to drink young cabernet and many of my oldest wines are cabernets or cabernet blends (which she is happy to drink), simply because at the price-points I buy at they often peak a fair bit later than the shiraz or shiraz blends. Also, Cabernet(s) don't go as well as shiraz with the hot'n'spicy food we often eat.
So I've stopped worrying now. ;-)

But still pick up some good cabernets when they impress me.

Nice mini-vertical selection dazza! GW obviously loves the 06, 95pts. Enjoy! Getting up in price for me these days though at $50. Still, for a wine of such apparent quality and low quantity from what seem to be iconic vines, I'd stretch my non-existent budget for a couple of bottles. :mrgreen:

6x 07 Craggy Range Sophia

Went to the Auckland staging of the Hot Red Hawkes Bay show, tasted a total of 31 wines, and this was the one that said 'buy me'.
Others of note for me: 07 Clearview Old Olive block, 07 Craggy Range Block 14, 06 Esk Valley Reserve Merlot/Cabsav/Malbec, 06 Esk Valley Terraces, 05 Matariki Quintology, 07 Vidal Reserve Merlot/Cab, 07 Villa Maria Reserve Syrah.
Had a taste of the 05 Tom, not yet on release. Best Tom I've tasted; benefits from having some age against others available on day, and seems to have more Cabsav than earlier efforts. Way too pricey for me!

Unimpressive was 07 Crossroads Elms Vineyard HB Reserve Syrah; first sniff I thought it was a glass of beer. Yeast galore. Also unimpressive, 05 Pask Declaration Malbec; pale and thin, with only a hint of typicality. The black wine of Cahors, I don't think so.

6 2003 Wynns Black Label.

On special at DM for $23.99 so couldn't resist. Cracked one open too:
Noce purple colour with a thin red tine at the edge of the glass. Nice cab fruit, forest floor on the nose. The palate was initally very closed and took about 3 hours in the decanter to come alive. Great cab fruit with plumb and plump raisen fruit cake. Nice ballance with a smidge of oak that lasted a good 30sec on the finish. Should be good for 2015 assuming I can keep my hands of it until then.
