Friday Quiz - Over

Post by Quizmaster »

What am I?

I commemorate the anniversary of a famous Australian who embodied the soul of the country during a particularly difficult period.
I’m from a year considered to be very good.
I accumulated 3 Gold and 1 Bronze medals.
I’m Big Red.
I was considered amongst the best, if not the best, not only in Australia, but the world.
Upon my death, flags across the nation were flown at half mast.

Wasn't there a wine/port named after Phar Lap?

Sorry n4sir, well done, I was so busy buggering around looking to see whether Banjo Patterson fitted the bill that I failed to note you'd beaten me to it.

1980 Yalumba Vintage PharLap Port

Well Craig, we finally got you there
Others were close, but yours was the first correct answer
Did Michael ride Phar Lap

I am the 1980 Yalumba Phar Lap Vintage Port.

From the back label:
The legend of Phar Lap embodies the soul of Australia during the Great Depression. Plain and gangly as a young colt, Harry Telford, his trainer, developed Phar Lap into a great champion.

Phar Lap began his racing career in 1929 at Rose Hill in Sydney. In 1930, 72,000 people watched Phar Lap win the Melbourne Cup. He later raced in Mexico beat the worlds best in the Agua Caliente Handicap.

He died 15 days later, from a mysterious cause. Flags were flown at half mast in Australia and newspapers in America ran his obituary on black bordered front pages. Damon Runyon in a front page story argued that the ‘Big Red’ was not poisoned, but still the nation plunged into mourning.

The 1980 Phar Lap Vintage Port commemorates the 50th anniversary of Phar Laps 1930 Melbourne Cup win. It will improve with further bottle age and may require decanting prior to serving. Its track record to date – 3 Gold and 1 Bronze medal from 3 starts.

Very good observation Ian.

Your protest is noted, photo for first reviewed .... and you are declared the winner by a nose.

A special purpose quiz designed to get Craig across the line and he blew it

Which makes denying him the victory so much more satisfying!

Now for the technical part:

Has anyone actually tried the port recently? If so, detailed TNs please.

Thanks

Allan
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

Thanks Craig. I have to admit to feeling just a little guilty for getting in first (particularly when my very first response was just a little tongue-in-cheek).
