Either the Limestone Ridge or 389 are fine - your call. Would prefer the Bin28 (one of my long time favourite labels) over the Chalambar or Stocks as backup. But hopefully it won't be required!

Thanks everyone for a good night. It was nice to meet Tim and his friends Danielle and Rowan. Craig (chillwrx) was in good form as usual. I wasn’t taking notes so these are just impressions of the wine. Hopefully the others can fill in more detail/post their impressions also.
We started with the 2001 Galah (by Ashton Hills) Clare Valley Sparkling Shiraz. Hard to judge the colour as the restaurant was dimly lit, but it was pretty dark with a red mousse. Initially predominantly savoury, after the first glass the sweeter plum fruit came out, but only to balance the savoury aspect. Lost its bubble quite quickly, but a good start. Very Good.
Next was the 2005 Massale Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir. Quite closed initially this wine opend up quite quickly to reveal slightly sour morello cherry with some earth and forest floor. Nicely balanced acid. Really needed to be drunk with food. Very Good.
Craig’s 2004 Hewitson Old Garden Mouverdre was next and was consumed with the three pastas served as entree and the nose reeked class. Much deeper and darker than I had been expecting, it had some up front sweet black fruit and finished extremely long. Excellent wine.
With the mains we had the 2002 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cab Sav. When I had opened this to double decant and check it at home I was concerned by the lack of fruit on the nose and palate, the latter of which was dominated by quite dry green capsicum. Fortunately it had broadened in the three or so hours it had been open and with food was quite enjoyable. The fruit never really shone, but it was Quite Good.
Also open with the mains was the 2000 Penfolds Bin 389. Lovely, dark fruit, excellent tannin structure and a nice long finish, this was quite classy and was certainly the most powerful and deep of the wines. Clearly still has a lot left in the tank, but drinking beautifully. Excellent Wine. A toss up between this and the Hewitson for the WOTN, but hard to choose when there are two quite different styles.
Restraint prevailed and we didn’t open the Tamburlaine that Danielle had brought or the Lazy Ballerina that Tim had brought as a backup. Quite controlled I thought. The small numbers were a bonus I felt as you really got to appreciate each wine, with more than one glass to truly assess them. And it made the conversation more intimate also. The food was more than adequate and we walked away at $30 each including corkage, which was a bonus.

Great stuff, cheers, hope all had a blast and will do my best to get to the next one. Good on Michael for persevering and organising it, good on those who attended and let's hope more of us who wanted to be there can make it next time. Social aspects of wine are great.

A somewhat belated report on the great night we had with Michael and Craig at Giardinetto... I was prompted to reply by Gavin's latest email on 'Small Parcels of Premium Wine', in which the latest vintages of Leeuwin Estate Art Series C/S and Hewitson Old Garden Mourvedre were both featured... coincidentally, the wines that Michael and Craig brought along for the offline.
We started with Michael's sparkling shiraz which (from a limited experience of sparkling shiraz), I seriously enjoyed. It was one of my favourite wines of the night.
Rowan's 05 Kooyong Massale Pinot was great after a little time in the glass and was a refreshing change from the usual confectionary/cordial qualitites of the kind of pinot I can afford.
Michael's 02 LEAS C/S was a little capsicum-ish (emphatically reinforced by the capsicum in our big bowl of veggies served with the awesome osso bucco) but a sound wine, and enjoyable.
The 2000 Bin 389 was pretty great on the nose, and tasted brilliant considering it's thought of as a lesser vintage of the wine. I'm really looking forward to trying a 'great' vintage now...
Craig's Hewitson Old Garden Mourvedre was a favourite of many at the table (Rowan's WOTN), but I have to admit it was a little to sweet and 'indiscreet' for me. As M & C suggested, it was an interesting intellectual experience, with lots of fascinating smells and tastes to be had, but I was overwhelmed, even with a big osso bucco to accompany it.
Sadly we didn't get to the 2004 lazy ballerina or the 2003 tamburlaine members' syrah... but maybe next time i certainly had a great time and enjoyed some more experienced opinions.
