The wine market :O !!!!! What's been happening??????

Post by mmmwine »

Hi all,

I read something about the wine market going up and down last year and was wondering why this might be. I want to be able to put the market into context of what was happening in the industry during 2008. Perhaps you know of major events that have happened or significant changes to the industry that would have interested those who are fans of wine. I don't know alot about wine or the market so any information you could provide would be great.

Its a shame I cant find the article anymore otherwise I could have shared.

Thanks in advance.

And you have no right to demand an immediate response...

I did not demand... i was just curious :) I just feel that we are all adults (atleast id hope so, teen drinking is such a worry nowadays) and perhaps we had a thought. For future reference I could give you an example of what it would look like if I was to demand something...

'I see 15 of you have looked at this post! Each and every one of you MUST NOW tell me an answer to my question! If you don't do so NOW I will be furious! You have precisely 15 minutes to provide an answer and if you do not I will dislike you all!'

(Please note my excessive use of exclamation marks)

Although, I would like to say that I appreciate your comment even though it was not useful. Thank you!

One visit for each year of your age.

Haven't you got homework to do? There might be some cartoons on later as well.

Come on, despite what other people might have told you, we think you can do better. In fact, I bet you can.

Having just read mmmwines other posts I feel compelled to come to the rescue. Please leave a briefcase containing $1000 in $100 bills at the corner of Stanley st and Main st at 6pm exactly tonight. Come alone and then leave quickly. I will arrange for the package to be collected and upon receiving it an undisclosed location I will provide a comprehensive answer to the question you have asked at the beginning of this thread. You will be monitered so don't try anything.
As always, IMVHO. And Cheers

Actually, I now understand. I am very very sorry! You have nothing intelligent to say so you are rude instead! Life must be difficult when you are intellectually challenged. Look I will make another thread just so that you can be rude :)

mmmwine, you may have gotten off on the wrong foot here. I think the point that was being made above is that in general forum posts here aren't answered instantaneously, this is a more passive forum. If people haven't posted after viewing your thread, either they are taking time to consider your post, or have nothing constructive to add.

In general, best practice is to only bump a post after 24 hours with no replies.

I'm afraid I don't have any specific knowledge about the state of the industry and can't contribute to your question, but thought I'd try extending something of an olive branch :)

Good luck!

GFC - it's being blamed for everything else.

By the way I know I couldn't possibly expect a speedy response, I was simply trying to be encouraging. Unfortunately some people were clearly discouraged, but I feel that has something more to do with their general attitude towards things.

Yah very true about the GFC. However, what would explain the highs? I know an obvious answer is that perhaps people are so poor and have lost so much money they choose to start buying more wine so they can drink their troubles away... However, that is clearly not realistic

Hi mmmwine - if you're really intereste din this, you might want to contact the wine marketing division of Adelaide University, as they probably know a lot more about the 'ups and downs' that you are referring to.

Sorry I can't be of more help!

It's awfully broad. What's 'the wine market'? Sales of Oyster Bay? Price of 2004 Grange? Percent of Oz market being lost to imported wines? Market share of cleanskins/own brands? Value of Palandri/Evans&Tate? Share prices? Shiraz sales in the US? 2008 Bordeaux en primeur prices? Auction clearance rates/reserve prices? Waiting list for Rockford's Stonewallers? I hardly know what to answer...

I would have thought that a governing factor that occurred during 2008 was a higher than expected yield , wasn't it ? So the end of the glut didn't really happen ??

Have you tried the Wine Australia website? It's probably as good as starting point as any.

And don't flame me for not providing a link, them's the rules.

Little known is the GPC - Global Posting Crisis. Posts down around the world, forums around the world suffering, governments baling out forums with government posts, major Post Stimulating Programs, I hope it all comes good.

Ironically, mmmwine's thread is part of the recovery now, a thread where half the posts are about not posting. THis is what happens in a GPC, posting for the sake of posting.

Just doing my bit to pull us out of it....

The WineAus website only outlines future events. Lets start basic, can anyone please tell me if there were any major festivals or exhibitions (or anything similar) during 2008? Im looking for anything that could have drawn extra attention to the wine market.

No, not a thing in 2008. It had us all scratching our heads as well.

Cheers
