1978 Chateau Lafleur
Amazing 6cm long cork – one of the longest I have seen. Light to medium red with brown edges. Starting to show its age. When holding the glass up to the light it was deep and impenetratable. Stunning nose of ripe plums and cherries, tobacco and subtle cedar. Very subtle sweetness of rich fruit. Five hours later in decanter: no change. When first opened, palate was closed and unyielding. Half an hour later it had blossomed with lovely length, as the rigidity of fruit gave way to lush, opulent ripe fruit. Medium-body augmented by slight overt oak, which subsided with time. Overall big but balanced and very exotic and rich and quite an individualistic style. Finishes with fine gravely tannins. Has many years ahead of it. A top wine in remarkable condition.
Excellent 18.5 / 20
