30th Anniversary

Post by John #11 »

Sue and I will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary in 2010.

I would appreciate some advice in advance regarding 30 year old plonk to help us celebrate.

Please.

John

Biased of course but 1980 was a vintage year in Oporto. There are a few vintage ports that would be suitable. Taylors and Dow would be worth looking for.

cheers

Bartenders are supposed to have people skills. Or was it people are supposed to have bartending skills?

It appears 1980 was not a fabulous vintage almost anywhere in the world. Not that this should matter.

I'd avoid vintage Champagne, and if you want to drink Australian, I'd be looking at a vintage Port. It might be the safest bet. I honestly can't think of a table wine I'd recommend.
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

If you had asked this question last year I would have said that your best bet would be 1980 Ports. Despite it not being a touted vintage they have developed far better than expected. I've had a few, most recently the 1980 Graham's, and they were very good. Haven't had any 1980 Australian port but based on a 1967 Stonyfell that I had in 2004 I'd say that would be a good option as well.

However, in the last six months I have had a few 1980 table wines and in each case I was more than pleasantly surprised. In one instance a wine I had thought dried out and fruitless the last time I had it was all savoury, complex and full of interest. So if you are lucky enough to find a bottle of 1980 table wine from a good producer that has been well stored then I recommend giving it a go.

For the record these were the wines that surprised:

1980 Marchesi Antinori Chianti Riserva, Italy
1980 Sella and Mosca, Cannonau di Alghero, Sardinia, Italy (A grenache!)
1980 Haut Batailley, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France. (Drank better than a 1989 I had a few weeks before)

Good luck.............Mahmoud.

John,

Keep an eye out for the Balgownie Cabernet, an excellent wine and still holding up extremely well. The Brown Brothers SMC is another good 1980.

cheers

Wifey and I met in '95.
Became a couple in '96.
Got married in '04.

Been concentrating on the '96s and '04s. Luckily, vintages which aren't too bad. Unfortunately, both of us are '77 babies...

Oh well, can't win them all...

You know Carl,

The year of conception wines are always an option:
- '76 Grange
- '76 Sauternes esp. d'Yquem
- '76 burgs

Cheers,

Monghead.
