Venue sounds perfect. Bringing our own glasses is also fine with me. With everyone using different glasses, we will probably need some form of measure. Also, if someone has a wine thief type opener that could be very handy for the older bottles. I would like to keep the numbers down so that we get a decent size sample. I am keen to see the 89 included and I do have 1. Also have the 2003 and 1987 available !

1987 would be a great vintage to include, a classic. we could buy in Curt?? We are so close to a full vertical of every vintage that we care about, we might as well go the full hog if poss

Nayan - it perhaps depends if you can confirm the guys from Stonyridge can come and if so what they can bring, then you can fill the gap with whatever works.

I'm happy to chip in $10 for an extra vintage if we have to. Lets see what the Stonyridge guys confirm, and also what my friends from work confirm.
Cheers,
Mike

Craig,

Haven't bought the 05 yet, so can you grab the 94 for me.

Cheers,

Nayan

PS As I am travelling, I don't have any glassware. Would any kind soul supply four glasses on my behalf? I'm happy with XL5s

I have just thought of someone else who might like to attend. Will bring numbers up to 16.
Will confirm as soon as I hear back.
Can someone please confirm the vintages we have - and those we need.
Cheers,
Sue

Right, I have the 94 in my hot little hand for you Nayan. $135 notes I will hit you up for my friend. Expensive visit, walked out with 98 Esk Terraces and additional 94 SRL for my cellar. Prices too tempting.

My friend has confirmed that he would like to attend and will fill in one of the more recent vintages - maybe 01, 03, 05 or 06.
Need to know is what the unconfirmed wines are.

cool. think its important we try to land an 05. Along with 08 probably the best vintage on paper this decade for Auckland for bdx styled reds

Agree. Sue - why don't you assign 05 for your friend, and we'll see if the stonyridge folk can plug other (older) gaps, if they can come.

Note - we needn't be desperate to try to get to 16 people - that's getting to be an awful lot for the room - 16 was the absolute max, not a target to reach! Its not the largest boardroom on the planet by any stretch.
Cheers,
Mike

As I said in my last post, I was hopeful we could keep the numbers down, 12 people with extra vintages brought in, would have been ideal. I do not have easy access to my cellar so had to make a call yesterday and since there was only Craig who sounded keen "on going the whole hog", the 87 & 03 are no longer on offer. I will bring the 89,90,91 or if Rob is attending the 90,91,95. Does anyone have a Wine Thief / Butler's Thief wine knife ( the 2 pronged cork remover ) ?

From experience you always end up with a couple less people than expected. 16 is ok if you run the pouring efficently and accurately but id say doors are shut now on any additional people. It is still basically a good half glass each (40-45ml pour) per vintage

I volunteer to organise to pre measure a pouring vessel or two based on confirmed numbers.

I have a couple of screwdrivers in the car if a cork gets stuck hehe

Yes - we have one of those, Curt - we also have a cork remover contraption if a cork falls into the bottle. Will bring that too.

Will check if the 05 is actually gettable and get back to you in the next couple of days.

I didn't realise you wanted only 12 people and to buy in extra vintages as there were already 15 possibles on the list. If you want to buy in extra vintages, how expensive for us all this is going to become?

16 pours per person from 700ml is 43.75 mls per person, per wine - that is a decent size sample for a tasting. It also leaves 50ml in bottle for sediments in older wines to dipserse, and enough to have a sip later, if necessary. If you drink everything and have another sip afterwards, you will have consumed a bottle of wine!

Cheers,
Sue

I didn't have a fixed number of people in mind, Sue, neither 12 nor 16. Its just that if less than 16 it wouldn't be a bad thing, as that's getting to be an awful lot for the space available. As it happens, I don't think my wife will be able to make it unfortunately but I'm still going to bring both my allotted vintages, so that will help. As for my friends from work - probably only be one of them, not both, can come now so assume he/she will bring one vintage, probably 03.

So, we're looking at 11 - 14 attendees (as Rob, David Jackson and Summer Bell are unconfirmed), and 12 - 15 vintages (89,90,91,94,96,99,00,02,04,07 confirmed & 03,05 unconfirmed)

As for buying in - I don't mind chipping in for a classic vintage, but wouldn't choose to get carried away buying in multiple extra vintages.
Cheers,
Mike

agree. considering the venue is free and our wines are basically all already purchased its a bargain srl tasting for basically no additional outlay. $10 for a buy in of a classic vintage is a no brainer. Wouldnt bother with a lesser vintage eg 98,01,03. They arent going to add anything really.

if the 05 doesnt materialise, and since the 87 is not available im happy to offer mine as a buy in. I dont think any other vintages above those confirmed are "must haves"??

Dont listen to those aussies, at least the last word in our thread heading isnt "cancelled"

Got a good date/ time, central and cheap location, right amount of people and good collection of vintages for a classic nz wine. What else could you wish for except an invite to it

I would love to come but just couldn't possibly attend a tasting with 16 other people. You will hardly get to taste the wine.

750mls/16 is a decent tasting. Ive arranged several tastings with 16 people and there is enough. In fact i think its the optimum number. If i need an extra sip i will raid the wifes samples  I feel we will probably settle on 14 or 15 people anyway. 16 people is 46 mls samples. Way big enough for a formal tasting - that is a good solid half glass

Scenic cellars does 20 at their bdx tasting and thats just a bit small samples imo. However they always have a quarter a bottle left for seconds so about 30ml samples first up and ruck for the leftovers

750mls/16*16 is a good amount of booze per person for a saturday lunch :D

It's Tuesday now and counting down to Saturday. Craig will have notes posted either Saturday night or Sunday.

yip! Slow news is no news

Just got this message via email from Nayan:

For some reason I cannot post on the Auswine site at the moment.

Would you be able to do me a favour and post something in the Larose vertical thread along the lines of that Stonyridge are sending three people (the GM, Viticulturalist and an Intern), but I don't know what they might be bringing yet.

Cheers,

Nayan

3 unique srl vintages including pre release 08 and 87?? Cummon Nayan where are your negotiating skills? Close the deal. No Fallen Angel Chardonnay etc! :D

Else we might have to set up a stall and charge them $18 per 25 ml sample as they did to me a couple of weeks ago. Revenge could be sweet :D

So that seals the numbers at 15 people. Would love to know what vintages they intend to bring.
